Because wood rods break, bulge or fail very easily. They expand and get stuck in the bore. Then you have two issues. A stuck case in the chamber and a stuck wooded rod in the bore.

i too have had 223 russian cases get stuck most of the time they can be buttslapped out somehow the case allows fowling to coat the chamber and builds up

Thank you. I am used to using a wooden dowel for shotguns and didn?t really realize that much force was needed to dislodge that type of obstruction.

If you use a wood dowel. Use birch. They have it at home depot. That cheaper stuff at home depot just smashes in the bore.
Use a better cleaning rod to tap the case out.
I will never understand why people pay so much for a nice rifle and shoot the cheapest ammo they can find.

THE BEST IS STEEL. Same stuff military cleaning rods are made of. For good reason.
With the end deburred so as not to scratch or gouge rifling. Mine also have the end center drilled in order to assure the bullet tip keeps the rod centered in bore. But leave a [ring] of flat stock around the center drill hole on the end. To sit in bottom of case head.

Old style shotgun cleaning rods are made of select straight grained MAPLE. Same stuff that is used for quality pool que shafts.

+1 to the do not shoot cheap .223/5.56 steel case rounds in a nice rifle. They do stick on once a while, especially if the chamber is hot (heats up powder causing more pressure). They are fine in the lower pressure 7.62x39.

Don't use one long dowel or rod. For a dowel, especially for something as thin diameter to fit in a .22 cal bore, cut them into 2 to 3" long pieces, then stack them into the bore and then use a small mallet on the last piece sticking out. The point of using several short segments is that they won't flex and break like a single long segment.

I can't recall where I saw them, but there are also short length, small diameter brass rods you can get for slugging bores. Same concept.

BINGO! I don’t care how expensive the gun cost. If it can’t shoot general run of the mill steel ammo, it’s an expensive piece of junk for me. Fail.
