Has anyone done this to their glock 23? Converting it to a 9mm? How does it perform? Is it reliable? I have a glock 23 gen 3, but i am not a fan of the .40 rounds. I am thinking about getting a 9mm conversion barrel but i am not sure how reliable the firearm will be? Is the conversion barrel worth it or should i sell the 23 and get a glock 19 instead?

Glock 23, 9mm conversion barrel

I have used 9mm conversion barrels in my Glock 23, along with other .40 S&W pistols without issue. All you need is the conversion barrel and the 9mm magazines. It runs fine after you do that. It will be cheaper and faster to purchase a 9mm conversion barrel and magazines as opposed to selling the 23 and buying a 19. You will also retain the option to shot .40 S&W if you so chose. There are numinous companies that make conversion barrels, the ones I have were made by lone wolf. The only issue you may have is if you want to add it to your CCW. Then you will have to use it in .40 S&W. At least my county requires the pistol to be in its original configuration as far as caliber.Last edited by CGZ; 04-19-2023, 10:31 AM. -
My personal opinion is that it's not really worth it. There may be reliability issues, spending the money on ammo makes more sense than buying another barrel and mags, switching back and forth doesn't really happen. Also, why practice with 9mm and use 40 for defense?
It sounds good on paper but I looked at it a lot quite a while ago and decided against it. Keep an eye out for a deal on a used 9mm. It'll be more reliable and once you price out the cost of a decent barrel and the extra mags, you're not really coming out ahead.

Not exactly what you're looking at, but similar. I have a G33 (.357) and a 9mm barrel. I've never had an issue with it running normally with the 9mm barrel. I do have dedicated 9mm mags for it too, so not sure if that makes a difference. Main reason I have it is .357sig isn't always the easiest round to find. So when my stockpiles get low, I've usually always got 9mm on hand to shoot with."If a man hasn't found something worth dying for, he isn't fit to live." - Martin Luther King Jr.

I have a gen 2 G23 that I got a lone wolf 9mm conversion for. It fell right in and yes, you can use 9mm or 40 magazines. I didn?t replace any other parts and it shoots 100%. Only drawback is it ejects almost half the shells at your forehead. I have a new scar to prove it!Comment

Ive got the G23 and aftermarket 9MM conversion and it runs 5/5 no issues at all even with 40S&W mag. Not much of a fan o 40 S&W either, except in 1911 platform

Don’t sell ANY of your handguns!
I don’t know how many times I tell people this. They can always be handed down to offspring and loved ones! Guns will never get easier to come by, only more difficult. Look at the new SB452 bill in Sacramento where they want to ban the sale of ALL handguns come 2027. Will it actually happen? Who knows, but keep your already bought and paid for handguns!
Also, keeping your options open by keeping another caliber handy (besides “vanilla 9mm”) may be a good idea. Look what happened at the onset of the damnPANIC of 2020. 9mm dried up, but there was .40 to be found.
I recently bought TWO new Glock .40’s because I’m finding ammo for it everywhere and some on sale for a buck or two more than just 9mm (no big whoop). I bought conversion barrels not in 9mm, but in .357Sig because that’s my favorite round. Albeit .357Sig is expensive and not for everybody, but it won’t stop me from picking up a few boxes every month. You could do the same with a 9mm.
However, I’ve read that going from 40 to 9mm does require the swapping of not just the barrel, but the ejector on a Glock as well. Do some research too see if that’s indeed the case. I for one would never trust a 40-to-9mm conversion as a self defense gun, unless I had the correct barrel, magazines and ejector and I’d never compromise with that philosophy. Besides, I’ve already got a boat load of 9mm’s anyway.Last edited by TrailerparkTrash; 04-20-2023, 1:02 PM.sigpic

I have a Gen 3 G-23 I use for EDC. I bought one of the Lone Wolf 9MM barrels for it.
Bought a few G-19 mags for it (my Nephew has a G-19 I can give the mags to if I ever get tired of it). The only hiccups with it was with some Blazer ALUMINUM cased ammo. Seems to shoot brass cased ammo really well. I just loaded up 1000 124 GRN. 9MM W/ Blue Dot and it eats it up.
I will NOT change ANYTHING in the G-23 since it is an EDC Pistol. I just re-qualified with it a few days ago with it.
I just use the 9MM for fun @ the range. I just drop the barrel in and the G-19 mags and go. I already had 9MM dies and free supply of 9MM brass. I DO NOT want to reload 40 S&W. I have a lifetime supply of .40 EDC ammo.
If You're wanting to use the Pistol for EDC in 9MM, buy a G-19.
I don't currently own anything else in 9MM. I have 3 - 40 S&W Pistols.
I'm happy with the 9MM conversion for the G-23. No regrets at all. Just shot it again a few days ago W/ 9MM.Comment

I’ve been shooting mine without any issues. Lone wolf conversion barrel. I also did my 27 with no issues. Everyone said that I HAD to change the ejector too but honestly it hasn’t failed yet after many hundreds of rounds so I’m not gonna waste time doing it. If you have a 9mm to compare it to you can see the difference in them so it is understandable why people say it. But both mine work fine. I wouldn’t hesitate to do it, do not sell your handguns.Comment

If a firearm I want comes in both 40 and 9mm, I buy the 40 and then get a 9mm barrel for it. Additionally, I will buy (or make) a .357 Sig barrel for it. At no time have I had to change out extractors or springs.
If you decided to do this, the one thing to be sure of is that the OD of the 9mm barrel is the same as the OD of the 40 barrel. Many times this is the case since mfrs often use the same frame for both calibers.
Glock is one instance where you cannot just buy a Glock 19 barrel and drop it into a Glock 23 slide. A G19 barrel is .570" in OD, a G23 barrel is .590" in OD. For Glocks, you must buy a proper conversion barrel.
I have 10-12 pistols that I bought as 40SW that can shoot 40, 9mm, and 357Sig, all without issue.
What's not to love about that?

I had a Lonewolf, after a while I sold it and ended up setting up a 19. Still have my 23, but in Calguns tradition now I have both. Oddly enough ended up with another conversion barrel that just sits there.Comment
