That's leftist disinformation. Populations of Polar Bears was on a big upswing despite the supposed global warming. At least until wealthy Chinese in China started a Polar Bear pelt craze. Now the indigenous people up north are poaching a lot of Polar Bears to sell to the Chinese.

I would choose something like a solid copper or the steel "dumbell" of a DDupleks Monolit32. Shooting something thats 3-4 feet wide, I would want as much penetration as I could get.

I'd agree- an easy to handle (for the wife) semi-auto 12ga with a laser and slugs for the first 2 or 3 rounds and if those are misses and the bear hasn't gotten you yet then 00 buckshot for close up and hope for the best at that point.
Maybe a short bayonet even?

John Browning's Winchester 94 has killed more deer than any other rifle mainly for one reason: It is so darn light, slim, and handy to carry around with you. No Marlin or Henry can match it for comfort and convenience of carry. It outsold Marlin ten to one because of that.
No bothersome pistol grips or magazines to project out from the frame and get in the way, and annoy. I would everyday carry for protection, of those 3 choices.

Polar Bear Problems

I enjoy a good bear thread and found this on Shotgun World.

Gist of thread: Husband and wife in Canada live in close proximity to Polar bears. Husband will be gone for work soon and insists wife keeps one firearm handy for protection.

Her choices are:

Rem 700 .30-06
Rem 11-87 12 Gauge
Winchester model 94 .32 Win special

(note, later she adds a Mossberg 590 A1)

Within the Danish Military is a special navy unit that patrols Greenland, Slaedepatruljen Sirius (Sirius Sledge Patrol), and they adopted the Glock 20 Gen 3 for defense against polar bears. Their issued service rifle is the .30-06 Madsen M47, which is being replaced by the Sako TRG-42 in .338LapuaMagnum.

Have family that worked for Alaska F&G they carried 12ga with alternating buck and slugs. Used it 2 times on bears, very effective.

Not discounting any solid replies here in this thread, and things have changed, there, but defensive firearm chamberings recommendations 10 years ago for travel/camping outside of any settlements in the *polar bear kingdom* around the island of Svalbard, Norway were as follows:

MINIMUM caliber .308 Winchester, to be used if bear approached your position inside of 150 meters

12 gauge BRENNEKE hardcast shotgun slugs if bear approached your postition inside of 50 meters


These were the then-recommendations for firearms to be carried, the recommendation coming straight from the Norwegian Government.

Or one could use what Vince Lupo used to take the African Dangerous Six:

A Marlin Model 1895 SBL stoked with Garrett Hammerhead .45-70 540-grain hardcast flat point slugs to 1550 fps.

I wouldn't feel undergunned against polar bear with that firearm and ammo.

I'd need a fresh change of shorts, though, if I survived any encounters unscathed (save fer the sheetn'mahshorts)

It varies up here.

I use Federal Flight Control 00 for the first round, then black magic slugs.

Some folks use bird shot for the first round, then slugs.

Other folks use nothing but slugs.
