I like shooting puddles for target practice.

They say "Never shoot at water because bullets will skip like stones" but I'm only shooting airguns at low power and nothing that will be hurt for over 100yds over a hill and wall.

We've had some nice big puddles due to rains and I've really digging the instant feed back for my quick draw pistol and rifle drills at Minute of Bad Guy's Vitals target practice in the 7-50yr range.

There doesn't seem to be any easy low-to-no cost option to get instant feed back during target practice. Paper targets you gotta either set up spotting scope or walk out to target and try to figure which of the tiny holes you made when. Other targets like Hickcock45 uses its pretty much binary whether you hit or not. Shooting into water at max draw speed and min accuracy lets you instantly see if you missed by 6" or 6'.

puddles are on the ground, if a bad guy is on the ground I would say someone with a bigger caliber already took care of bad guy, no need to shoot bad guy with a pellet gun.

When I was a kid ... eezus ... way back in mid 60's

Me and my buddies used to go down to the creek with our BB guns ...

They was these freaking BIG polly-wogs ... they were about 3" long with heads the size of a marble ... and they come up for air and bink, bink ... bink bink bink !!!

So ... hey you know ... we were kids. I wouldn't be so eager to that today, I have a respect for life of all living things.

This actually sounds like fun. Too bad it's not a good idea to do with the firearms due to skipping.

But if you're looking for instant feedback, you'll get the same if you put a clay fragment somewhere on the berm and practice on it. You'll know instantly where and by how much you're missing and you'll make sure those bullets remain in the berm. As a side issue, this is how I get plinking rifles on paper even if I bore sight - just pick a speck in the berm and walk the impact close to it, then move on paper for fine tuning. If I start on paper I end up with early holes that can mess up the neighboring bullseyes.

I'm not understanding how that will let me know by how much I'm missing if I'm using a low power BB gun, unless the berm is covered in fine dry dust and even then I'm thinking the BB would just bury without much to see.

BB into nice big puddle on a calm day makes a pretty big splash and send wave radiating out to further help pin-point the impact.

I can't seem to make either BBs or pellets skip from any angle or power setting when I set a sheet metal back-stop directly behind the puddle. All splashes look pretty uniform and all the energy seems to go into making the splash.
