Any idea's on what is a guns purpose ?
For ME: a gun is for shooting enjoyment in a shooting range, for self/home protection, and for the satisfaction of collecting.

        It's about proper word choice.
The gun is designed to launch a projectile. However, the purpose of the gun is up to the person using it.

My mother always told me to be careful what you ask for.

Just one more piece of parental advice I stupidly ignored.

Purpose and use are two different things.

Its purpose is in fact nothing more than to propel a projectile faster than one could throw a projectile with the human arm.

At some point, someone thought it would be nice to have a device to throw a projectile (pebble, rock, sharpened stone) at something they wanted to hit that would propel it faster than they could do so with their arm.

So they came up with a slingshot. A bow and arrow. A catapult. Then a cannon. Then a gonne.

            And so on.

David took down Goliath with a slingshot that he only used for hunting up to that point, because it wrung a rock faster than he could throw, with deadly force. But in and of itself, all it did was propel a projectile.

How he used it made all the difference.

If some level of government had that information, what would they do with it? How would having that info benefit public safety? How would it benefit law enforcement?

                      You fellers 'r slackin'.

                      Purpose of a Gun?

A gun is for pew pew.

                      That said...

A firearm is simply another form of weapon.

Throughout history, the distinction between free men and slaves is that free men are born with the inalienable right to self-defense and therefore are accomplished users of weapons from a young age.

A slave is denied the use of weapons.

The late-20th and early 21st Centuries are the first time in HISTORY that young men are not routinely taught the safe and effective use of WEAPONRY.

This fact alone should have our unwavering attention.

We must continue to engender the education of the safe handling and effective use of firearms for self-defense. This is our calling at the very least.

Firearms are, for me, a weapon used for self-DEFENSE. I do not use firearms in any offensive role.

Too, as was pointed out earlier in the thread by Kokopelli, firearms are one of the many forms of industrial art. They are tools to be admired, to be kept in good working order, and are tools to be *respected* (looking at YOU, Alec B.)
