    The Mighty .45 ACP

    from usconcealedcarry.com.

According to the July 1996 issue of the Air Force Magazine, it happened during WWII in the skies above Burma.

The Tenth Air Force was dispatched to destroy an important railroad bridge to disrupt the Japanese supply chain.

2d Lt. Owen Baggett was co-piloting a B-24 bomber when the formation was attacked by Japanese fighters.

After taking heavy damage, Baggett and the rest of the crew abandoned the aircraft and began parachuting to the ground.

    Then something terrifying happened.

The Japanese fighters began taking turns trying to shoot the parachuting airmen with their guns.

The American airmen floating helplessly in the air.

    Well… almost helplessly…

Baggett still had his handgun concealed on his leg.

When a Japanese fighter plane approached for a pass at Baggett, he raised his pistol and began shooting at the plane’s cockpit as best he could.

    Then something unthinkable happened.

The plane turned towards the ground and crashed.

Baggett made it to the ground alive and was captured by Japanese forces.

During his time in a POW camp, Baggett was told that the pilot he shot down was thrown from his plane when it crashed.

His body was found with a single bullet wound to the head.

    The gun Baggett used?

    His .45 ACP M1911 pistol.

The 45 ACP is a good round---no doubt, but a 9mm would have done the same thing with a headshot... If out in the wilds, I would often carry my HK 45C, 8+1 in a compact package...

I still prefer my G22 w/ a 15rd, .40 caliber magazine with one in the pipe. Buy hey, that's just me.
Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

The U.S. city with the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, Washington, D.C., has the highest murder rate at 24 per 100,000.
The state with the most unrestrictive gun regulations, Vermont, has the lowest murder rate at 0.48 per 100,000.

LOL. Guys on Calguns are afraid to drive to the range unless their gun is locked up and concealed in a case that makes it look like a tennis racquet, but they’re not afraid to question the actions of a guy who fired on an enemy plane with a handgun while parachuting to safety from a heavily damaged bomber. You gotta love the internet!

Hilarious, that video actual spotlights the put together picture of Hiroyoshi Nishizawa's Zero with someone in a parachute to "prove" their point."

                    LOL

The Japanese unit involved was the 64th Sentai - an Army unit flying Ki-43 Oscars.

Amazing the crap that gets repeated as "truth".

As all the people who around back then have died off, you won't get first person witnesses to affirm or deny these claims. You will have to rely on the accounts of those who were there, Christopher Shores is one of the few authors who has gone thru the squadron records of the units of both sides - to try to piece together what actually happened. One of the Japanese pilots of the 64th Sentai has a memoir too - published well before Baggett's Airforce magazine article. None of these support Baggett's version.

Also, Baggett's obituary claimed it was a 45 revolver he fired.

The way I heard it was the Japanese pilot saw that giant gaping business end of the mighty .45acp 1911 pistol pointed at him and was so profoundly terrified he shot himself in the head to avoid its wrath and thus crashed the plane.

I believe it. I saw a 1911 destroy a German Tiger tank with a few rounds of 45ACP.

But a 9mm would’ve blown the Zero pilot’s lungs out.
