According to the July 1996 issue of the Air Force Magazine, it happened during WWII in the skies above Burma.
The Tenth Air Force was dispatched to destroy an important railroad bridge to disrupt the Japanese supply chain.
2d Lt. Owen Baggett was co-piloting a B-24 bomber when the formation was attacked by Japanese fighters.
After taking heavy damage, Baggett and the rest of the crew abandoned the aircraft and began parachuting to the ground.
Then something terrifying happened.
The Japanese fighters began taking turns trying to shoot the parachuting airmen with their guns.
The American airmen floating helplessly in the air.
Well… almost helplessly…
Baggett still had his handgun concealed on his leg.
When a Japanese fighter plane approached for a pass at Baggett, he raised his pistol and began shooting at the plane’s cockpit as best he could.
Then something unthinkable happened.
The plane turned towards the ground and crashed.
Baggett made it to the ground alive and was captured by Japanese forces.
During his time in a POW camp, Baggett was told that the pilot he shot down was thrown from his plane when it crashed.
His body was found with a single bullet wound to the head.
The gun Baggett used?
His .45 ACP M1911 pistol.
great story!
