The only peace of mind way is to write a big check in the marketplace. Like $7,500 or more big. Unless you have someone out of state who can gift you one?

The options are limited in CA. You'd have to get one of the clone rifles with a 16" Bbl. It would also have to be featureless (unaware of any maglock options). There are a number of manufactures that make them such as PTR. IIRC Turners carries them. There's also the .22 LR clones if you want to keep the features (and spend less money) these are also closer to the ascetic IMO to original MP5s (minus the fake suppressor). The clones in 9mm already cost $1500 - $2000 so I'd only imagine how much an off roster pistol version would PPT for.

off roster MP5 pistol would fit the definition of an AW unless with a FIX magazine. (Frankly not sure how you would load that)

A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
                    • A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer.
                    • A second handgrip.
                    • A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon without burning his or her hand, except a slide that encloses the barrel.
                    • The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip.

I did an experiment for a cal gunner on mine one time and was able to load my sp5 magazine through the ejection port. It’s super slow, and retarded, but doable.
                        Primary method:
                        1. With bolt closed on empty chamber, remove end cap.
                        2. Remove lower receiver.
                        3. Remove magazine and load it or replace empty magazine with loaded magazine.*
                        4. Reattach lower receiver.
                        5. Reattach end cap.
                        6. Rack charging handle to load a cartridge into chamber.

*In order to be CA legal, can only use 10 or less round magazines.

Can you take the magazine baseplate off and load it from the bottom?

                            Yes, that it another method.

                            1. Flip pistol upside down.
                            2. Remove magazine base plate, magazine spring, and magazine follower.
                            3. Load 10 rounds into magazine body.
                            4. Reinstall magazine follower, magazine spring, and magazine base plate.

What is usually done with those MP5 pistols to get them legal in CA is to perm attach a fake suppressor to get the barrel over 16" and then install a fixed stock.
Then a grip wrap will get you featureless.

On an AP5-P or SP5K, you don't need to remove the end cap. Once the lower is removed, the shim under the magazine release button made from a drain plug wash will drop out.
