I use Sabre with the flippy top. Just slip your thumb under the top and press. Like this one:
Stay protected with Sabre finger grip v. flip top. Pepper Spray featuring an ergonomic safety. Ideal for quick access and ultimate peace of mind.

I keep it on a retractable lanyard similar to this one:
This stainless steel retractable key ring attaches to pens, badge holders, or keys. Attach this retractable key ring to keep essential items safe and near.

I clip it to my belt and I always know where it's at. I don't have to dig around in my pockets for it. If I need to be a bit more discreet, I just stuff it into the top of my pants pocket. Still very accessible.

Also, I would suggest to get the one that comes out in a stream, not a fog or gel. The fog may not be concentrated enough to get in his eyes/lungs to affect him and the gel may be too gooey to drip into the eyes/mouth etc.

OP-Keep your old ones and practice with it in the backyard. Set up a target at 10 and 15 feet (not yards) and see how it sprays. It'll give you an idea of just how close you have to let the scumbag get to you before you bless him with the holy hot sauce of righteousness.

Yeah - bear spray is fine particle for a bears nose

Many videos of a pot shop and an attempted robbery with bear spray and it's ineffective on people Vs OC

I'll chime in on shelf life.

A lot of the spray on Amazon and EBay are expired or close to expired.

Use due diligence when buying spray online done buy New old stock and receive expired spray.

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Which applies when you are in uniform and working a paid guard gig. (In theory, ought to be OK travelling to or from, just like open carry is legal for guards with gun cert on their way to/from.)

I went and bought the small 4" can because it fits the holder, plus I guess I can use like an "civilian" or more likely lend it to someone with the cert.

However IIRC a uniformed guard can't use spray even small size without getting the cert.

They mostly sell the "invisible UV" spray and while I'd like to try some UV paint/dust for theft etc detective work, I don't see it being that useful w/spray.
Never heard of cops using UV lamp to track down a perp in a crowd that had been sprayed, but I'd bet if "the crowd" was asked "anyone see which way the green monster just ran?" they help.

+1. I tend to stick with Fox Labs and buy directly from Fox. Never a problem getting new/fresh product. Note too that it isn't the actual pepper spray that goes bad, it's the propellent that degrades.
