Do you mean forcibly with a crowbar and prying implements?
Because they can use those same methods to get into any locked container too.

      Locked is locked.
I lock my vehicle when I leave it.
Nobody can get into the vehicle without forcing entry.

        1) Because you and the passengers can't readily access the firearm. The point of the locked container law is to prevent you from transporting firearms as if they are your CCW. Although I agree with hunterb that the legislators are ignorant and therefore the "reason" really doesn't matter.

        2) I don't know the definite answer, but realistically you will face charges or at the very least get hassled by LEO for doing this.

Apply for CCW! The recent supreme court decision has made this a favorable time to apply!

They can police that if they find you doing that.

Loaded mag can be in same locked container box, trunk etc but not inserted even partially in the gun.

Can my ammo/magazines be in the same locked container as my handgun?
California has no laws prohibiting ammunition or loaded magazines from being in the same container as the firearm as long as there is no ammo loaded into the gun. The question is, can you readily access the ammunition?

So why not just insert the last mag unloaded??

                  2. Is a loaded magazine placed in the handgun yet not fully inserted (or snapped-in) still considered "unloaded" in CA, since obviously the gun cannot be fired.
Your premise of your first question is incorrect; the trunk must be locked:
HANDGUNS Pursuant to California Penal Code section 25610, a United States citizen over 18 years of age who is not prohibited from firearm possession, and who resides or is temporarily in California, may transport by motor vehicle any handgun provided it is unloaded and locked in the vehicle’s trunk or in a locked container. Furthermore, the handgun must be carried directly to or from any motor vehicle for any lawful purpose and, while being carried must be contained within a locked container.

You argue with stop signs also?

Then your trunk ain't locked. So there you are. Must be in a locked container. I'd guess that if you pulled over to get out and ask directions or whatever and a kid stole your gun because your truck is unlocked; you'd be in deep doo doo.

Pursuant to California Penal Code section 16850, the term "locked container" means a secure container that is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment.
My god. That is the dumbest answer ever posted on Calguns ever.

My trunk can be accessed via the back seat. Anyone sitting in the back seat can pull one side or the other of the back seat and access the trunk.

And if a loaded magazine is only partially inserted into the gun (not fully) is that considered loaded? If so, why?

Iirc, the mag has to be fully inserted into the weapon to be considered loaded.
