Truck Gun

I'm buying a new Mazda CX9 and am thinking of how to safely and legally transport firearms in my car. Id like to hear the opinions of others that have or have had a truck gun secured in their vehicles in the past. Anybody against truck guns in principle, kindly go away.


For long gun storage is where I'm more looking for suggestions. The best options I've found besides like $3000 for a full on TruckVault are the following:

I like the electronic primary lock option in the first two but they're both made in China whereas the locking only option is made in Rancho Santa Margarita so close enough I can pick it up locally.


As far as what weapons these might be securing, f I can fit a featureless AK back there, then that'll be my top choice. If not, I'll throw a featureless PSA cheapo AR back there.

Those are much more expensive then the one I put in my truck four to five years ago, can’t remember the brand but it was around $250 I think. Steel with a double lock, made to fit under my rear seat using the seat bolt locations. Perfect fit holds an AR and other gear.

I keep a dedicated truck AR in it, only time I take it out is to use or clean it. When my son took his driving test at the DMV it was in the truck, what they don’t know won’t hurt them. Ha ha

Ooh I like that! I don't see any easy way to mount that to a crossover though.

Agreed but I don't think its California compliant. Also, they're never in stock like most of KelTec's few good products

You may need a custom made box. No matter what you do it’s gonna look like what it is.

I looked at the rear cargo area. My wife’s SUVs all had this small compartment under the rear cargo area. There is a lid that covers that space. My wife’s QX has one and so did our Sorento. You could do two things

Have someone make you a metal cover that bolts in place of the original cover (basically think of it as a false floor. Have carpet glued to the cover so it looks like a piece of factory floor….and make some locks like a tonneau cover has or some sort of locking mechanisms. Hell you could technically go hidden locks use some magnetic locks that open with a remote or a release button somewhere onnthe hatch. I use magnetic door locks for door holders for mental wards and these take like 25,000 pounds of force to open them. I’ve had 300-400 pound guys slam into doors to try and open them l they will break the door and bend the frame before the mag releases And they come in 12 volt. You could do a battery back up in case your battery dies.

The other option is to have a custom made box that sits on the floor or under the rear seats.


Personally if I was carrying a car gun I would go with a pistol. The whole goal is to get back home not fight a war on the spot. A pistol lockbox is easier to hide and store in a car. I would choose a reliable 4-500 dollar pistol. Glock, XD type. Reliable but you’re not leaving your prized Colt Python in the truck.

If yiu really gotta have a rifle I would go with a basic $600 AR. I woild go with a 9mm ar simply to keep the same rounds as the pistol. Break it down and stored in separate lower and upper it won’t be too large and can be hidden easier in a smaller box. Three mags for pistol 6 mags for AR.
I dont wanna carry a bunch of different ammo and I rather heavily replenish from the pistol to the rifle or vice versa. The whole idea is to simply get me out of a situation and home. If we’re talking SHTF situation. Self defense would simply be a given.

Are you stuck on a long gun ?

There are lots of options for a handgun.

I'd wait until youn get your car so you can really get into all those storage places and see what will work. A small briefcase with a combo lock works really good.

Some might leave it unlocked while they are in the car, if they need to lock it then its a 2 second job to turn the dial.

My son uses an electric latch to hold an AR, the same kind used in patrol cars. He mounted it to the backside of the passenger front seat. There is a hidden switch in the driver's footwell area. He throws a jacket over the rifle and you cannot see it at all. He's not in California.
