Used to be 6 weeks. But last one I did was a few months ago and running 8 months. They claim Covid and workers are at home

FYI, there's no legal reason for them to respond to your submittal.

Should only take you a few minutes to fill out and send in the form.
After that, you are done.
There is no need to wait for any sort of response.
You have fufilled your legal requirements when you mailed in the form with payment.

The check clearing your bank is proof enough that they received your form and payment.

Submission of the report fulfills all your legal requirements.

Pre-pandemic = 4-64 weeks after they cash in payment for the report.
Post-pandemic = 6-18 months after they cash in payment for the report.

If you transferred the firearms when you were a CA resident, then your CA son just need to submit a completed Report of Intra-Familial Firearm Transaction to CA DOJ BOF.

If you transfer the firearms as a non-resident of CA, then the firearms must be transferred (4473, CA DROS, 10 day wait, etc) to your CA son through a CA FFL dealer.

This is because, since 1968, Federal laws [18 USC 922(a)(3),(5)] have prohibited the transfer of firearms between residents of different States without the use of a FFL and there are no exemptions for intra-familial or gift transfers.
Failure to utilize a FFL equates to a Federal felony for everyone involved with the transfer. [18 USC 924(a)(1)(D)]
And submitting a report to CA DOJ BOF, instead of utilizing a CA FFL dealer for the transfer, equates to documenting the Federal felonies making it easier for the Feds to prosecute those involved.

Do the transfer in CA with your CA drivers license before you move out of state and surrender your CA drivers license for another state's drivers license.
If you have left the state and no longer have CA residency/drivers license, the gun needs to transfer through an FFL since you are no longer a CA resident.

Now, what's to stop Mom from giving the same Son 23 firearms out of her collection? Why couldn't Son report all 73 at one time paying just $19 for the whole lot of them?

I was thinking of the single lineage father-son transfer so that only involves 1 to 1 and that's why I was thinking 50 was the number.
I wish I had more than 1 father and 1 mother so they could send me more than 100 off roster handguns at once from out of state.

When I did one it took about 2 months. Usually I can gauge how long until the confirmation by when the check get cashed. Not in this case. It was cashed within 3 weeks of when I sent it in but the confirmation letter arrived 5 weeks later.

I tried doing one that I ended up having to re-do. Sent it in using the older form. Waited and waited. Check was not cashed. Waited some more figuring maybe no one got around to mine due to the pandemic. Gave it another year before resubmitting it again. It was processed and returned with a confirmation about 3 months later. Figured if they found the first one submitted they might catch it in their computer system. Thought if that happened they send me a letter asking why I submitted it twice. It has been over 4 years since they first one was submitted so it probably lost for good.
