    Body Armor for Civilians?

I was just wondering how many civilians actually use soft armor for EDC or specific applications.

I own my own professional photography business and tend to carry around $60k of equipment in some interesting places such as Terminal Island, Long Beach, Vernon, etc. Due to me living in Los Angeles, it is almost impossible for me to get a CCW, even if I have already been robbed once. Considering that one would never take a knife to a gun fight, my only real option is having a good defense (I do have OC spray and a folder). One of the officers that responded to my incident educated me about the armor they use and subtly suggested that body armor might be a good idea due to the nature of my working environment. I thought that it might be a good idea to have protection, but wanted to hear some opinions on thoughts about it before purchasing. Some of my friends thought that my idea was a bit overkill, but some also thought that it was a smart thing to do. One of my main concerns is if LEOs would become suspicious if they can see that I am wearing concealed body armor (mostly due to the bulk if wearing a shirt in the summer). And, if I did wear armor, I would most likely wear it everywhere. So if I ever did get stopped by a LEO, things could get interesting if I was going/leaving the range with my OLL- could it qualify as probable cause to search my vehicle? I'd hate to have to explain my OLL and body armor at the same time

    Thanks!

      Thanks Mitch.

I found a reputable dealer that will sell me a Point Blank Vision III-A vest for a fair price. The idea of a car accident does help to put armor protection in a larger scale of things, heck, if I were a motorcyclist, I'd definitely be wearing it! (besides the kevlar that they are wearing already)

I wonder how our Sheriff would feel if more civilians began using armor to protect themselves because of the issues regarding CCW licenses here in California.

Dumb question. Why do I see signs at gun shows where folks are selling body armor saying that "buy now, cause this stuff is going to be illegal to own"? Is this FUD?

I've seen the same guy spouting that crap for at least the last 3 years while charging about 3 times as much as the stuff is worth.

My current vest is a Second Chance Level IIA with steel trauma plate, its fairly comfortable but pretty hard to conceal in street clothes, although I've never really tried. When I'm usually wearing it under my uniform its pretty obvious I have it on. And on hot days, its just cooking, your undershirt beneath the vest can make a big difference as well.

                LOL!!

Yeah, crooks aim for the head, but they can't hit the broad side of a barn.
Especially when they are holding their Glock sideways.

                Armor= good investment.

That is a lot of money/equipment to be carrying around. People have been shot and stabbed for less. I think protecting yourself is the best thing to do. Since you can't get a CCW, I wouldn't worry about stopping the crime, I would worry about staying alive if something should happen. A vest is a smart investment IMO. Also, if you haven't already find some bags to carry this equipment that keeps you low profile as possible.
Point blank makes a great product and I recommend it. Also check out this website, I have heard many good things about them.

Well at least the body armor can protect you if a guy stabs you right? Some people have guns but I have seen a lot of things happen with knives too. Usually they won't stab your face, they will go for the gut or something of a bigger target.

Yea, anything kevlar is probably stab rated. The military IBAs are stab rated, and also serve as impact padding. I learned that hard way.

I'm not military by the way, I just have military friends that give me their spare gear.

Most vests don't protect from stabbing. Some do have an inner layer, but they're more expensive.

I was under the impression that body armor was illegal to wear unless you're performing a legal duty that requires/warrants it's use? That's what I was told when I was required to wear a vest for work.

And yes, they do make you VERY hot in the summer. Underarmor is your friend! So is Axe deoderant and Febreeze.. I remember many times putting on a wet vest from the night before.... ugh!

Somebody was wrong. Maybe they didn't want you wearing the armor all the time and getting it dirtier/sweatier than if you were just wearing it for duty?

Body armor is as legal as a thick shirt.

I have a friend that ordered one from BulletProofMe, it is a good company to deal with, they offer there own line and a police surplus line that you can get for cheap. And it works just fine. Make sure you get a good undershirt!

Just a thought if you find a brick and motor stores giving you a ruff time.

PS they also make AC for your Vest that runs off a cars cig lighter, look into that since you will be traveling might be worth it.
