I'm not in the habit of selling my firearms but if I can't imagine what a person would do if they were trying to liquidate their collection, for whatever reason.

As I get older and my shooting habits change, I think I'll need to seriously look at what I do with my collection. I shouldn't have to wait decades to sell my personal property (firearms & ammo), if I either need the money or no longer shoot them. I'm not saying that I'm to that point yet or that I intend to break the law but 'Come on, Man!', what's a guy to do?

I have watched friends sell of entire collections piecemeal, 1, 5, 2, 10 whatever at a time. These were collections numbering close to, if not over, 100 misc firearms all being sold in a short time period.

                You just do it.
If the DOJ suspects something, they are going to contact you.
You explain that you don't need them anymore so you are transfeering them legally through licensed dealers as a private collector.

People often fall into ill health and need to sell off guns to fund their healthcare.
The DOJ is not likely to get into the way of that activity.

Their use for the 5 sales-per-year law is to stop people who are actually buying and flipping for profit or selling illegally.

If you routinely buy 30 glock 19's in a single transaction, you should expect a check-up from the BATF or the DOJ as they will suspect you might be selling them illegally.
If you KEEP all those glock 19's, they will not have any problems with your collection of glock 19's.
If you can't account for all those glock 19's, they are going to have some much more serious questions about where those guns went.

I don't think it's enforced but then again I really don't wanna find that out myself, I don't sell much anyways.

From what I've seen, it hasn't been a grave concern, because 99% of the time people are not volume flipping to move large numbers without a license.

And with every transaction now days fully documented, it's not a huge concern.

So with the CA DOJ 'supposedly' short-staffed, this issue of selling 5 or more by PPT by most people who are either collectors or simply like firearms, that are law-abiding people otherwise, is likely to go with little attention unless there is clear indication someone is using special 'perks' (like LEO), importing high volumes to CA by moving here, or other circumstances to acquire and quickly sell a large number of modern production off-roster wares by PPT.

For the most part, the CA DOJ seems indifferent, even ambivalent to the enforcement of this issue - where no real victim exists, everything is fully documented, and there isn't even a moral turpitude condition to cite.

However.... keep asking about it, keep making a production out of it, keep bringing it up every day in threads and new threads - and they sure will.

I sold 10 different handguns via ppt one year and had no black suit agents coming to my door.
