Question on transporting in an SUV vs a car

Maybe I'm over thinking this, googled it but couldn't find anything specific.

In a car where there's a trunk, toss it in there and you're good. In an SUV, does it have to be in a seperate locked container or can it be in a hidden compartment of the trunk where not visible?

I also have a truck (extended cab) I guess safe bet is put it in a locked case and put it under the rear seat?

Search the forum, this has been gone over time and time again. Had you bothered to search, literally pages explaining in great detail all the answers and also the law as they relate.

I have a suv and a van. And live near a school.
I play it safe. I bought 8 of these locks.

Change the combination so they are all the same.
They have some locks with longer cable.
        Always keep.a.couple.extra.in my range bag.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

These locks work great on cases with zipper.

^ Shame, you learned nothing, just got spoon fed. There are also specific methods to make transporting the firearm to and from the vehicle legal but you'll never know because you just didn't bother to find out. There are also other requirement related to firearms transportation but hey, you got the easy answers so you'll probably never know.

                  Transporting in a vehicle...

~Long guns need to be unloaded.

If traveling through a Federal GFSZ, then the unloaded long guns need to be in a locked container or in the vehicle's locked trunk or in the vehicle's locked firearms rack. [18 USC 922(q)(2)(B)(iii)]

If the unloaded long guns are left in an unattended vehicle, then it is prudent to have them in a locked container that is hidden from plain sight or in the vehicle's locked trunk or in the vehicle's locked toolbox.

~Handguns need to be unloaded and in a locked container or in the vehicle's locked trunk. [PC 25610(a)]

If the unloaded handgun is left in an unattended vehicle, then it needs to be in a locked container that is hidden from plain sight or in the vehicle's locked trunk or in the vehicle's locked toolbox. [PC 25140(a)]

As long as the ammunition is not contained in the firearm [PC 16840(b)], ammunition can be in the same locked container that the unloaded firearm is in.

*Vehicle's locked trunk = the locked luggage or storage compartment of the vehicle that is not accessible from the vehicle's passenger compartment. [PC 25140(d)(1)(D)]
*Vehicle's locked toolbox = a locked fully enclosed container that is affixed to the bed of a truck or vehicle that does not contain a locked trunk. [PC 25150(d)(1)(B)]

                  Transporting outside of a vehicle...

~Handguns need to be unloaded and in a locked container and the course of travel must be directly to and from authorized locations. [PC 25505]

~Long guns need to be unloaded and in a locked container or encased and the course of travel must be directly to and from authorized locations. [PC 26405(c)]

*Encased = the unloaded long gun is in a fully enclosed container designed for a firearm. [PC 16505]
^If the container is not designed for a firearm, then it needs to be locked.

See Quiet's post, just above yours.

No need to lock up ammo.

In the vehicle, no need to lock up non-assault-weapon long guns - but probably a need to at least case them when moving to and from the vehicle.

My Jeep Wrangler JKU has no trunk. I mounted a locking vault under the front seat. Easy access, always locked-up legal.

When I visit my parents, they live within 1,000 feet of a school. My long guns (all bolt action) and unloaded are in soft case but not locked, in the rear cargo area of my suv, out of sight. My suv is parked in their driveway. Is this legal?

If you bothered to think, you would realize that California changes/updates gun laws pretty often...so a previous answer may no longer be valid; and you might also realize that it's a forum...asking questions and discussing things is the point.

Unless going through a school zone...and most people probably do without even knowing it. Most churches are school zones because they have on campus schools, preschools, day care, etc. Is a local cop going to bust you for a federal crime? Probably not, but why risk it. Just carry all firearms unloaded in a locked container or trunk.

Key point: Does your rear seats fold down giving you access to the trunk? Then you probably don't have a "locked trunk." My car, the rear seats can only be unlocked and folded down from inside the trunk so I am good. Many cars you can unlatch the seats from inside the passenger compartment.
