Kyle seems like a pretty level-headed guy, to me. I believe he would not have wanted the news and pictures of his rifle being destroyed played out on the evening news.
First, he wants to move on with his life and heal from this whole affair, hence his desire to destroy the weapon. Second, I believe he would not want the story spun for the benefit of the anti-2A gun grabbing zealots.
