Just start to open carry a nice big 1911 on your hip at all times when at home. MIL will either suck it up, or move in to mooch off another family member.

MIL notwithstanding, you need to be more careful with your firearms.
I already know that, we have an 8 month old, and 95% of the time the other kids are not here. I know its not a good idea to have guns where kids can access them and i am responsible if they did get to them and something happened. This is the obvious that you pointed out, but im not talking about that and this is not the reason why i made this thread. Its about my MIL talking about business that is of no concern to her or any other extended family members.

I thought about this, but the last thing i need at home is more drama. She isnt mooching, she pays for 1/2 the rent/utilities/groceries. it works out good for the most part since it saves us money as well.

Whether or not you have firearms and whether or not they're safely locked away is your business. It is not the business of your MIL, the aforementioned aunt, or any other member of your extended family.

Their business is to teach their children to respect firearms and know what to do when encountering them. Don't touch, go tell a responsible adult. Their paranoia about what might happen to their children around firearms speaks volumes about their children and their abilities as a parent to impart wisdom and responsibility.

That responsibility intertwines when the child is in your home, and ONLY when they are in your home. Lock up the firearms before the kids come over, or go lock them up if they arrive unannounced. Beyond that, tell - as kindly as you can - your MIL and other relatives to go screw.

I agree 110%! Usually when they come over or if i come home and they are there, the bedroom door gets locked, they have zero access to the bedroom.

You kick out the MIL, and your sex life goes with it. You'll a house full of guns and a............"hankering" that won't go away. Do what I did with my GF when she moved in. Just walk around and keep the guns out when you are at home. Just randomly walk up to her and hand her a handgun and say "hold this for a second" and walk away. After a while they just get used to it. It's all about exposure. Make sure you have them safely stored when the kids do come over.

Wow, I thought I had it bad. Youre MIL is a real piece of work, and I think it's time for a "come to Jesus" meeting.

That being said, you need to have all your firearms locked when you are not immediately present. Period.

So is the MIL living with you and your family a life sentence or did you and your wife give her a time frame for how long she can stay? I mean, roommates, no matter how much rent they pay or who they are related to, generally do at least one thing (usually more) that really suck and can be a deal breaker. Your frustration with her sounds like you know she's going to stay forever. Once she's back on her feet financially (maybe sooner), I feel you've gone above and beyond the call of duty and she should go.

BTW, where is your wife in this struggle? Is she on your side or her mother's? Your MIL may listen to your concerns more carefully if they are coming out of the mouth of her daughter and not from just the guy her daughter married. If the Mrs. isn't with you on an issue this important to you, maybe your argument isn't really with your MIL anyway.

Your original post just made my blood pressure go up into the imminent stroke range. I'm very glad my MIL is pro 2A and has her own house.
                    Best of luck.

Next time at her house, go into her medicine cabinet and make a list of all her prescription pills, then call her and ask if each one by name is locked up so kids can't access them. If she can stick her nose into your business, her business is fair game as well.

Just run a cable lock through the shotgun when the rug rats are present. Personally, everything is in the safe unless I'm home.

As far as the MIL goes, I'd have a serious sit down with her. Be polite but, remain firm. Explain to her why it is a bad idea to divulge such information. Use examples that contain unintended consequences. Also, explain how her actions affect you personally and that you consider is disrespectful. Go after the action and not the person. Get your wife to back your play on this one. Don't even think about doing this unless you have her complete support ahead of time. She will have a better idea on how to approach her mother than you do. Besides, I find that having a woman to translate when speaking to another woman cuts down immensely on the BS factor. Good luck in any event.

When I was a a little kid we'd go snoop in my grandpa's closet to look at his shotguns. We knew we'd be in deep **** if we got caught, but we did anyway. Fortunately we knew enough to not play with them, but we were raised around guns. It sounds like your extended family wasn't.
I would get the wall mounted rack also...I remember when I found my dads shotgun as a nosy little kid..luckily he never kept it loaded. I loved racking it and pulling the trigger...it was such a wonderful sound as a child...luckily it never went boom.

Dude i understand Im in a crapy situation to. I got a back injury and cant work untill i have Surgery so my wife and i moved in with her folks, dad cool gun guy also, mom in law, brother in law not so much. We got in a heated debate abuot my guns. I said firmly, its my duty to portect my wife and family in any way i can i cant fight so i will shoot period. She just looked at me and said nothing with her mouth open. So now i keep my guns here and all my reloading stuff and guess what no more problems. I love my guns as much as i love my wife so i will protect them and hold them close to my heart.
