Any recommendations for improving my shooting???

    I have a pistol.

Are there any books I can read online or buy?

When I go to the range, how far should I place the target from me to start. I obviously will have trouble with 25 yards. 10 feet, 20 feet?

I have seen some online vids on grip and stance. It would be nice to see some book with images on grips and stances.

I know I am not going to be some expert in a month, but I want to practice at least every month.

    Thanks.

    Take a class.

The safest, most efficient and cheapest way to shoot better is being well trained by a qualified instructor. Take a class...then practice what you have been taught. Have fun

      Dry fire. Alot.

Practice squeezing the trigger until it breaks rather than pulling.

Mix snap caps with live rounds when at the range...load your mags randomly and see if you're flinching.

Don't play bullet golf and just throw lead down range. Load one round, shoot, analyze, correct, repeat.

When proficient and comfortable with your firearm, sign up for training. Plan to spend as much on training as you do on ammo.

          IMHO - buy a 22 handgun.

This allows you to have the most practice, without killing your checking account. And with the recoil being nearly non existent, you'll find yourself not tensing up your hand, squeezing too hard, anticipating recoil, or flinching. It's like dry firing but more fun.

            Good advice right there.

Front sight focus, then add pressure until the hammer falls. Do not un-focus from the front sight.

The rear sight will be slightly out of focus...good

The target will be slightly out of focus...good

The front sight must be clear, sharp, centered.

Do NOT look downrange when you shoot...stay on the front sight.

Talk to yourself: "Front sight-----squeeze. Front sight----squeeze etc."

The traitor is the plague."......Cicero

If you live in the LA area? Come shoot with me. Practice with decent instruction makes for a better shooter. PM me if interested. This is not a business venture, just fun shooting.

Buy a .22, as already mentioned. Cheap ammunition, and one can concentrate on the front sight and not be distracted by flash and recoil.

                    Practice.

Practice with an instructor or successful shooter who has experience.
(experience isn't necessarily good all by itself, since one can practice bad habits and unsafe practices for twenty years).

Don't become discouraged. It takes time to learn how to do anything well, and one has to put in the time.

                    Ask questions and read.

                        This.

Plus LOTS of practice. Dry firing with snap caps costs only time and energy. You should fire anywhere from 10 to 100 rounds of snap caps to every live round.

Take a good class. Heck... take 2.

Reading books and watching videos will only get you so far. The rest requires active participation on your part.

Have fun, be safe, and enjoy exercising your rights.

Well I know from just the reading here that I was not focused on the front sight. That will be my first adjustment.

You can try shooting PPC league in Reed's Indoor. The guys there know their stuff and will give advise that will help you get better. They even have the following nifty target posted up on their website:

Take a basic handgun class at your local range. Make sure you take account of the instructor's credentials.
