OP, what does your son plan to use the shotgun for?
        A Mossberg 500/590 would be a good choice. I have a Maverick 88, Mossberg 590, Wingmaster and a 1100. I know it's going to be used but it's hard to be a 30-40 year old 1100.

Good luck. I'm sure that what ever you get, it will always be special to him.
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.
        Happiness is a warm gun.

My first shotgun was a 20 gauge Mossberg 500. I still use that gun every year for bird season. Ole faithful and still going strong.

A 20 gauge or 410 would be good

Is it a boy or girl? That'd be my determining factor between 12g and 20g

I'd go with one of the tried and trusted entry shotguns like a Mossy 500 or Rem 870.
