Reasonable Cost For FFL To Receive Ammo

They always say, lets see if we can get it at the same price or better instead of buying it online but availability for local GS's is limited and they so far have not been able to do that, the rare opportunity online is forcing me to want to purchase hard to find stuff when it pops up.

So what is the going rate to receive ammo? Best I have been quoted is $10 per 1k but that's a drive for me. Anyone know of something close to that in the High Desert? Even a bit more would be ok to save me an hours commute.

A lot of LGS's seem to price transfers for guns and ammo just so they either make a lot or just discourage it.

A local FFL here (San Diego) charges $20 per shipment plus state tax (if not collected by seller) and a 3% credit card charge (just pay cash).

***** I don't know if the $1 DOJ check fee is included in the $20 fee. Plus I'm sure if there's a $19 DOJ fee, the price would be higher.******

One here wants $25 up to 500rds + $1 DOJ

Then it's 20% of total charge of purchase.. + $1 DOJ

Needless to say, glad I'm still pretty flush.

One has to remember the FFL has to pay rent, and keep your ammo dry and away from folks handling / taking it. Plus employ employees to manage the store and receive inventory and watch the ammo.
And a lot of folks don't pickup their ammo same day it gets delivered.

U don't work for free and neither should they.

Don't get mad at the FFL, it's the state u should be mad at.

          $10/k is more than reasonable.
20% is on the high side.

Given the shortages and being restricted by the roster to selling only certain handguns, many restrictions on the types and styles of other firearms that can be sold, just how much does it take to maintain a store and perhaps keep just one employee?

Along comes Mr Buyer who has this online order for which they will make nothing on the sale except being able to charge something to accept and process delivery.

The UPS truck shows up and who unloads it? The store owner. Who processes the receipts and documents the incoming? The store owner. Who then holds the order so that Mr Buyer can come in at their leisure to pick it up? The store owner. Who bear the brunt of orders shipped and the rants of those who complain even though they had nothing to do with the order other than to receive it? The store owner.

How much would you charge for that? Then consider what you pay people who do very little except put a signature on a piece of paper and charge hundreds or thousands to clear a loan, deliver your food (if you order it online) and so forth.

And then we want some store owner to charge $10 as if the only work needed to get your ammo to you is "accepting it" like it's beamed from the place you paid for it and no one did anything except wait for you to walk through the door.

I think we could all ask ourselves if we'd be willing to accept on-line orders knowing some shops can't possible get all the type, brands and styles of ammo everyone wants just in case they happen to stop by.

If we don't make it worthwhile for an FFL to stay in business we'll see more and more of them closing down and then some fee to accept and process receipt of ammo you buy will seem inconsequential.

Well I guess I'll see if my guy can get the ammo, if not I will ship to him and pick up on a day Phillips is open so I can stop in there also and see what I can find. I also found a place that sells targets in Duarte, so an early start, hit all three places and get back on the road before traffic.

I have everything to load ammo but I only have one box of 22lr my guns like. There are 2 rimfire matches I like to shoot but haven't been able to go for a few months.

Last I saw, gunfighter tactical in SD was free for ammo. They just ask you come pick it up asap instead of letting it sit.

Well, disregard. Just went to their site and it says they closed the retail shop. That's a real bummer.

One LGS here charges $25 plus tax plus the $1 DOJ fee regardless of amount. I'd have to order a huge amount to make it worthwhile.

The other LGS does not accept ammo for transfer. He simply does not have the storage space for it. I know him well, and he is not just saying that to keep from doing it..

I have considered going the 03FFL/COE route, but not sure if it would be worth hassle and cost in the long run.

Lately, I have been buying from our local Big-5. Their prices are generally lower that either of the LGS mentioned above.

My FFL doesn't charge me one cent to receive ammo.

                    Of course it's my FFL.

Get your C&R and COE and have your ammo shipped to your house.

                    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

I wasn't looking for any special considerations or someone to lower their price. They set the price I get that and I shop for the best deal I can, that's how it all works. I have no problem with $10 per 1k and that's what he has set, it's just quite a drive. He is a one man operation and charging a reasonable rate is just good business that will come back to him.

Few of my comments are ever directed at the poster cited but I use the post as the general idea. Life is too short to make what happens on the Internet personal - unless the usuals have to start it first. So the YOU is mostly plural.

Your FFL may not charge you, but it did cost you.
Divide your total rounds purchased by the cost of the COE and FFL and that's your cost per round.

                              $71 COE cost.
                              ~$50 Livescan cost
                              $30 FFL cost

So around $150 before you can get your first box of ammo shipped directly to you.
