    Steel target recommendation

I want to buy a steel target that I can take to the range. Just a simple singular one, not one of those multi target star or tree. I'll mostly be shooting 556 at them about 100 yards away. Any recommendations?

Whether you're a professional or recreational shooter we have shooting targets for all types of shooters. Call 208-454-0555 for more info.

I've had good luck with MGM Targets. The have a Sportsman line that comes unpainted that are very reasonable. They make a T-post hanger that works great. I've got 8", poppers and square gongs. My buddy called them looking for a deal and the sold him a chunk of plate the cut wrong for $20 or something. They ship quick from Idaho, I believe. Very happy buying from them.

Try and get 1/2" . I've put some holes through 3/8" with 556
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

At 100 to simulate what, an animal kill zone hit or a torso? Most people get a saw horse hanger set that is cheap to purchase and easy to setup. But it is highly visible so other people will eventually take shots at it and ultimately miss and shoot up the legs.

I set up my targets differently, with a T or U post cut down so that the target obscures the legs.

A torso target has sharp angles that could crack. If I had to do it over again, just different sized circles or squares. Some of the other targets have holes very close to the edge so you don't hit the bolt by mistake but will also make the steel weak. I'd rather have cheap bolts get destroyed than my AR500.

A larger target is good so you can use it farther away for long shots and close for pistol work. Just make sure to angle it.

I will get this next if my stuff gets destroyed, but it's been 5 years and still holding strong.

I have had 1/2 inch plates and they don't ring as well. All my stuff is 3/8 and genuine Ar500 from ebay with many positive reviews. I have seen plenty of people selling fake AR500 with milder steel that will get punched through.

My friends all have some sort of ADD and can't seem to understand that they need to shoot my close steel with pistols only and make mistakes shooting it with their AR with 55 and 62 steel tips at 15yds. No holes.

Use a larger hammer to drive stakes in to the ground. 2.5lb I think I might have blasted the torso at 50yds with some slugs and cracked it.

MGM makes excellent targets. Pricey but excellent.

I have several of these from Action Target and they've been excellent. They're extremely portable, setup/fold up in seconds, and you don't have to dork with finding/cutting 2x4's and them getting all chewed up from the spall.

Do be careful if you're taking steel targets to public ranges. Some people can be real A-Holes and think it's fun/funny to shoot other people's targets. With steel targets it's USUALLY fine unless you're on a range that allows rifles and somebody decides to launch .223/5.56 at it. Ballistic steel is rated to 3000 fps and many .223/5.56 rounds are traveling faster than that, especially inside 100 yards. And that's fast enough to take chunks out of a lot of targets.

                  .
It may be your targets or your method of hanging them is acting as a damper. I've been using 5/8 inch targets that ring very well, heavy as heck but withstands everything.

I've bought most of my steel from https://makeitringtargets.com/ pretty well priced, free shipping and sales every now and again

This, I don't shoot steel with my 24" bull barrel anymore.

Thanks all for the response. I'll take a look at MGM targets.

I don't mind others shooting my target as long as they don't put holes in them or damage them

What thickness should I be going for for 556 at 100 yards? 1/2"?
Also, does it matter if I'm shooting m193 or m855?

There are people who sell fake AR500 on eBay

I'd want to ask more questions about where you will use the targets.

How long do you have to set up the targets?

Will others randomly shoot your target with their magnums and or steel Ammo?

Will you be able to drive out and back to set up the target so it can weigh 100+ pounds?
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
                            (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

3\8 or 1\2, if you shoot it with fmj it will make a small dent. Steel tip will make a bigger dent. Eventually it will become unsafe, years down the line.
