    Portable Target Frame Question

My local shooting range does not have target frames. I need to buy or build something that is portable (will fit into a 6' long space), and also will not move much or blow over in say a 20 mph wind. I don't know if can stake it to the ground, but probably could. But, it cannot remain there overnight. Target backer board would be about 36" x 36". Frame to be used for pistol shooting to at least 300 yards with a rifle. I may use ShotMarker electronic target system, so want bullet impacts a safe distance from the four electronic sensors. I can drive to the target area, so weight not a huge issue.

I am mostly concerned about wind and target stability given 9 square foot flat area. Gusts of wind can be strong.

I've some ideas but do not want to reinvent the wheel in the event something else has already been designed and/or is available.

    Thanks.

You will need to stake it down or put some sand bags down with that size target backer acting like a giant sail in 20mph wind.

I have my own metal shop in my garage and one benefit of getting into that hobby is being able to make your own siht. I made swinging metal targets and B-27 sized target holders years ago. For me, it’s the only way to go. Wind is never an issue.

Also, my range is the open desert, where “anything goes.”

Built my folding 6ft frame with 1x2 and 2x3 and bolts. Stands up to 10mph winds without bags or stakes. Folds to 1 long 3.5ft bundle carried by velco. My targets would rip before they would get blown over.

Just don't use pvc, they shatter when hit. Wood or conduit are better, the latter might cut you if not careful.

Action Target makes a nice setup.

            You can pair this base...

With this attachment that will hold 1x2's to mount paper targets to. It's very compact and portable. And it sets up real quick.

You can, of course, also pickup a steel target in your favorite configuration for the base. Once you shoot steel, you will never want to go back to paper.

Here are some stands I built for our club to hold walls for our matches.
The base is 2" wide flat bar, 3/8" thick,24" long. It's made to take 2x2" lumber. The square tubing is 6" long. Holes are drilled in the base for staking down.
If you're using it in windy conditions, I would use a 36" piece of flat bar for a bigger footprint and stake everything down.

I use old roadside campaign signs. Free after election day. Stick them in the ground and slap a shoot-n-C target on them and blast away at Democrats. If they bend in the wind you will waste ammo trying to hit it anyway.

                            Phil,
I have a couple of these portable target stands for sale. Two 48" leg lengths balanced hand held sides make up one target stand, stows away nicely when not in use, No forward facing exposed metal fasteners. No tools required for assembly. Multiple different angle settings for shooting on sloping terrain. Five different height settings from 54" up to 72" to top of target stand.
As seen in the photo, the largest square footage is about 10.5 sf and can adjust down to 9sf. and to 6sf. I use 36" kraft paper but cardboard, tar paper or plywood will also fit in between the two tensioned uprights, don't need a staple gun for attachment.

I have had excellent results with PVC pipe. Light and easy to set up and dissemble. A few T's and elbows, cut the pipe to the size that fits your needs.
