Totally realistic: and I'm sure California legislators are working on that very problem right now - with Newsom sure to sign it, if not fund a campaign for it with his very own money.

I'm sure Ting or Levine already have a draft waiting for submission next year.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Most versatile:
              - Ruger Blackhawk Convertible 4 5/8" barrel shoots 9mm, .38 Special, .357 Mag or anything else you can fit in it. Small enough to conceal, big enough to shoot.
              - Tube feed bolt or lever .22 rifle that will accept short, long and long rifle cartridges. Plinking, training, small game hunting, etc.
              - 12 gauge pump shotgun with selection of barrels and caliber adapters. Everything from CQB to hunting.
              - Centerfire rifle is a bit tougher as usually they only shoot one kind of ammo unless you have some sort of switch barrel gun. Most practical would seem to be a bolt action rifle in 308 but maybe better in 30-06 as the whole point of this kind of gun is medium to long distance shooting with some ooomph to the impact.

Accessories: Suppressors for each and a .22 conversion kit for my AR-15.

I'll mix things up like a weirdo, and throw a few curve balls at y'all:

1911 - trusty pistol that pokes a hole whereeever I direct it - every, single, time.
M1 Garand - without a shadow of a doubt, the easiest and most accurate iron sight rifle I can shoot.
Benelli M3 - 12 ga with interchangeable barrels and chokes, and selectable pump-action - there's nothing it can't do.
Marlin Model 60 - a 22LR with glass can do a lot of extremely useful activities, as well as be fun to shoot.

The apocalypse doesn't have to be ALL serious.
Treat every stressful situation like a dog.
If you can't eat it, play with it, or hump it ...
PISS ON IT, and walk away.

                    Daniel Defense DDM4V7 LW
                    Colt King Cobra
                    Browning BuckMark URX

Didn’t see a lot of revolvers noted. One of the four is a must.

Alternate - Beretta 1301 Tactical SG (please make it 5, otherwise I am hiding this one)

Here's something to consider : Since only the receiver is considered the actual firearm

                      Can't you "technically" get:
A Sig P320 FCU with slides in different calibers, even different slide/barrel lengths
An AR lower receiver with uppers in different calibers and again different barrel lengths
Then you just need a bolt action and a shotgun of your choice and end up with a lot more then just four actual firearms

*and even some shotguns can have different gauge barrel replacements

                      again "technically"

If I could only have 40 I'm not sure I think I'd be able to answer this question to my satisfaction.

Cool. I have a Benelli M3. I bought it because of the cool factor. Thinking of a Tavor TS 12 and a 26" field barrel for the M3.

I e-mailed Benelli and asked if the M3 was discontinued and they replied that they still make limited production runs.
