SHTF Bag

My bag is for staying put or moving small distances for 2 - 4 days. It's not for outrunning packs of zombies. I don't plan on running from a pack of anything unless I have to. If I do, it's my handgun, shotgun, and water. As far as the med pack, I have pretty good training to handle everything from a sprained ankle to a sucking chest wound. That's for right after the earth quake etc. Some of us would rather help our fellow man when possible. I've used that thing in a few different car accidents I've come up on. I even used the ringer cutter on someone who had a nasty compound fracture of the arm out in riverside county. Took EMT's 15 min to show up and his hand looked like the hamburger helper glove guy. I will say this. If it's me or you, it's going to be me. I get your point there. I'm not too sure about marauding around the country side though.
Now I'm not saying marauding the country side but I was trying to paint a picture for some of the people here. You did get my point which is cool but there are a lot of people here who may think I'm trolling when I'm not. We always read threads here about cool bug out bags and people with thier SHTF scenarios and how some people here think its cool but in reality it is very dark and will turn to survival of the fittest. Talk to people who lived in Africa and ask them about "Urban Survival" and see what they have to say about it. I've talk to some and thats something I want no part in
. As far as treating a sucking chest wound, when SHTF, how long do you think someone is going to last with one treated and without professional help and in an all out SHTF that can be a long time away. They train all infantrymen now for CLS (combat life saver) so we know how to treat for sucking chest wounds, tension pneumothorax, amputations and things along those lines but thats only to stabilize till the real medic gets to him and he can get medivac to a real hospital. Also its hard to treat a sucking chest wound on yourself. Sealing the exit wound on your back could be pretty difficult and in the event of tension pneumothorax, you would have to be one badass SOB to give yourself a needle chest decompression. The chances of someone living through that for days in a SHTF situation is pretty low. During the LA riots, rioters were trying to turn over Ambulances to steal the "drugs" they thought were on board or for just purposes of mayhem. 911 stopped sending ambulances out without escorts. Fire fighters became under fire when arriving on calls.

if your SO asks why you have them, they're for portable water containers.
Anyways...
I would separate into two bags - one with essentials to carry should you need to hoof it, the other that has more stuff that stays in the car.
3 firearms (shotgun, rifle and pistol) seems excessive to me, even for a gun board.
I would rather carry more ammo for one gun than several firearms. You're not going to be running an assault here, so stick with something that can protect you long enough to GTFO.
Choose some lighter/easier/faster meals than canned foods - MRE's, crackers, etc.
Be sure to toss in some paracord/rope/duct tape/wire, etc. You'll also want something to keep you warm.

Matches, Disposable lighters, duct tape, parachute chord, needle and thread, for your clothes or skin. A role of fishing line and hooks. You might want to get one of those cheap tents with the fiberglass poles. A 22 rifle with lots of ammo. A sleeping bag. Naw your not nutts, just short on some supplies is all, lol.I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.Comment

thats funny.
All you need. Gun, flashlight, prybar, knife, multitool.
In a SHTF situation you can use the gun to hunt, steal anything you NEED. Prybar to get into shelter and or into areas to steal what you NEED. Knife for stabiating and multitool for well... tooling.
Sounds jacked? What does someone think is going to happen when SHTF. Survival is an ugly thing and we arnt going to sit all together hugging around a camp fire singing cumbaya when it hits the wall. Travel light, do you think your going to be able to carry your ginormous EMT bag? Are you going to be able to outrun a pack of theives or dogs toting said bag?
Reality, a pistol, few energy bars, few bottles of water, multitool and flashlight are all you really need. Small IFAK if you feel you need it but med kits for something bigger than a scrape are kinda useless as they are there to just stabalize you till medics arive and in SHTF, good luck with that.
He's talking about a SHTF situation not a TEOTWAWKI situation.
Having gone through the eruption of Mt Pinatubo in the Philippines, and surviving Hurrican Andrew in Homestead, FL, I can tell you that you DO NOT want to go around stealing, it is a good way to end up DEAD. Other people who have taken the time to prepare are hunkered down with their food and water and their RIFLES and they will leave big gaping bloody holes in parts of you that shouldn't have holes.
Living in SoCal, a major earthquake is a possibility. Having to walk 15 to 20 miles to get home is a distinct possibility. If it hits in July, with 100 degree + temps, you will need all the water you can carry. If you choose to wait for help to come, it may be days getting there, you will need water, food, first aid, clothing, radio, gun, ammo, sleeping bag. Basically anything you would use for a 4 or 5 day camping trip in the middle of nowhere.sigpic

Like I said, I was trying to paint a picture. But what would you expect in SHTF? Look at Katrina, you may have to go steal that medicine for your love ones as some people had to do during katrina. You may be faced with some tough desicion. HAving your car break down and having to take a 15-20 mile stroll isnt exactly SHTF and a mountain erupting is just GTFO of town. Your OLL is going to do jack to lavaHe's talking about a SHTF situation not a TEOTWAWKI situation.

Going into an abandoned drug store to get necessary medicine is survival. What you described earlier sounded like going from house to house stealing whatever you thought could make it easier. If you had tried to go into almost any house in Dade County after Hurricane Andrew, you stood about a 75% chance of getting shot either by the resident of by one of the National Guard.Like I said, I was trying to paint a picture. But what would you expect in SHTF? Look at Katrina, you may have to go steal that medicine for your love ones as some people had to do during katrina. You may be faced with some tough desicion. Mt Pinatubo was more like Mt St Helens than one of the Hawaiian volcanos. It spewed out rocks and hot ash, no lava. It ended up being mud falling from the sky as a typhoon hit at the same time. When everyone in a 50 mile radius is willing to cut your throat for the gallon of drinking water that you have, your gun is going to be a necessity. I ended up hospitalized in Hawaii for 3 days due to dehydration during the evacuation.sigpic

Survival is ugly..you're right about that. Hopefully the first guy you plan on stealing from blows your face off and takes your flashlight.

Ugly indeed.

I think anyone thinking about these kind of scenarios should pay a visit to this guy's blog, and probably read his book "Surviving the Economic Collapse", I actually haven't read the book yet, but I hear nothing but good.
He has a much more realistic view of the kinds of things we are looking at here, barring major natural disasters, because he has actually experienced it. Most people seem to think we'll go from normal city civilization, to all out Mad Max in a matter of hours.Comment

Isn't there a law against a firearm in a case that is BOLTED down in a vehicle?A shtf bag seems like a good idea, but unless your house is coming down around you there should be 5 or 10 seconds to retrieve a weapon from a closet/ safe.Law which is uncertain in its interpretation or capricious in its application fails to fulfill its essential function.

And thats not stealing? Thats agreeing with what I'm saying
I'm not talking about going on a stealing rampage. I'm talking about survival. I wouldnt be the one to steal anything less doing without something will make a member of my family die. Like I said, I was painting a picture but kudos on getting that
Would this picture make you feel better? Zomies OMFG are everywhere! YAAAAY target rich envirnment and we all hold hands across America
Look at the past major SHTF across the world and how things turn. If I am stuck on a long trek across something as ****ed up as mogadishu, I break into an abandoned building to aquire some water and my face gets blown off then obviously I wasnt the fittest for survival.
Granted I was just painting a picture of survival but cool how you actually wish harm on another human being for hypotheticals
Want to know whats in my Vehicle bug out bag? Whatevers on me and the tire iron that came in my truck
I dont plan on going on a zombie shooting spree so hey, shame on me, I should get my face blown off
