Maybe even have a forum where people can post an overview of a deal and we can tell them if it's a scam. It would also eventually serve as a place where members get the knowledge to recognize these scams on their own. Stickie posts are great when you are specifically looking for them, but I would never know there is a new or updated post because how many of us already tune them out like banner ads.

IMO the best lessons in that area are self-taught.

The quick way for a new person is the wtb section on arf...they actually have rules and full-time moderation.

Not at all, but judging by the number of 'warning threads' and posts about people getting ripped off, I think there are some basic steps Calguns could take beyond a sticky post.

Why no favor for active moderation? It shouldn't happen unless rules are broken, and that's why rules exist. That takes us right back to Dr. Pimpin's post above.

Cash only FTF. It sucks to see something you want that is a far drive. But I'm not gonna risk it. If I'm selling, you drive to a FFL within reasonable distance to me. If I'm buying I'll go to your FFL.

Thats the point I am making. Active moderation and rules aren't mutually exclusive. You can't have one without the other and there are plenty of rules here. So what is missing?

Aren't MOST if not all of the scams being attempted on someone posting a "WTB"?
Then someone "cold" PM's them?
How would this be stopped by ANY form of "standards"?

By making it so that all users would have some sort of vetting system that scammers are unlikely to want to do in order to view the classifieds.
Something like submitting verifiable identification.
What if they had to use id.me to confirm identity before they can see the classifieds.
none of the scammers are going to do that.

If they can't view the classifieds, then they don't know who to PM their scam offers to.
There are LOTS of other places to scam people.
They are not going to spend much effort in any one place when it's easier to just move somewhere else.

We have already seen these scammers using shill feedback between their accounts, and we know they maintain many accounts here.

If you just block access from viewing WTB or other marketplace subforums, they will use a verified / established account to view ads and get PM links, then use burner accounts to send the PMs to make contact. So you'd also need to lock down PM.
