Ammo availability and pricing - 8/24 version

Not sure if others are seeing the same things as me. It looked like ammo availability has improved quite a bit since late spring. Pricing also improved quite a bit form the peaks in early 2021.

However I have noticed when I score online that availability has pulled back a little the last few weeks and pricing has been pretty stagnant in August (in some calibers it even seems as if pricing has crept up a little again).

Sucks a bit as I have been holding out a bit to get some more ammo, especially in a few common calibers. But I can hold out for a bit more as needs be.

Only starting to run pretty low on 357 mag, guess that will teach me not to get firearms in a new caliber during crazy times. Was hoping for some 158gr FMJ or SP to come in below 70cpr, but that seems a bit optimistic. The Calgun Marketplace is pretty much a joke for ammo still, though a bit better.

Everybody thinks the Calguns marketplace is a joke until they factor in tax, ship, and transfer fees. If you are honest with yourself and acknowledge your net price landed for ammo or guns you see at online ammo/gun vendors, to say nothing of availability or the lack thereof, you might find more value in the marketplace here.

I'm not saying every listing is a bargain, but people like to complain a lot more than is warranted IMO.

Perhaps, I typically factor in a 20% uplift for online ammo orders to cover the items you mentioned. This typically more than covers the overhead.

I have had some good interactions on marketplace for ammo, but the prices still are mostly more expensive than new boxed ammo even with the 20% uplift.

For PPT you also need to factor in the unknown element(age, storage, etc) of the private seller's ammo vs known retailer factory new ammo. Yes there are exceptions. In reality, unless I personally know the seller, I will not pay the same price for private seller vs store bought ammo.

It is a commodity, so the market evens out eventually. But he last brand didn't look overly positive to me. Not sure of the Russian ammo/arms exec order's impact on the latest pricing/availability.

It seems like the marketplace has gotten a lot better than it was even 6 months ago. There's still clowns that think their surplus can of 5.56 is worth $1/rd but a little searching and you can find it around 50-60 cpr.

Geez. Things are getting slightly better but still an absolute s-show. I mean even $30 for a box of 9mm is nuts.

I have been tracking availability via Ammoseek.com since April for Remington, Federal, and Winchester ammo for handgun, rifle, and shotgun.

As of today, the total number of websites offering those 3 catagories from those 3 manufacturers is down slightly.

Here is the lowest price per round for each catagory:

                Handgun: .35/round Remington
                Rifle: .53/round Winchester
                Shotgun: .36/round Winchester.

Those prices per round have held steady since early to mid June according to my records.

For comparison, here are the prices per round from back on April 26th when I started tracking:

                Handgun: .65
                Rifle: .76
                Shotgun: .47

Again, these prices were gathered checking for only Remington, Federal, and Winchester. I'm sure there are a bunch of lower prices available for other manufacturers.

We need something to change politically before anything significant happens. People are still unsure and panic buying, especially new gun owners.

We need to make big gains in the House of Representatives and Biden to be more neutered. I like that I'm seeing CNN criticizing Dems, at least a little over world events. I don't see anything getting better for Biden in the upcoming months. I can only hope (and vote) that Newscum is recalled.

I will take this shortage to heart and if, or when things get back to normal to dedicate more funds to get to a point of having a 5-10, or more years supply for reloading components and rimfire ammo. I'm still ok for now but scarily close to not seeing the light at the end.

Good info, thanks for tracking. I don't actively track, but did notice this trend of pricing dropping but now holding steady for a while. Didn't realize it was more like June when it leveled, might because of PMC, Norma, etc ammo that I saw as well.

Prices are coming down, but they still arent where they need to be.

Online prices for 9mm are at .40 cpr and .223/5.56 are still around .60-.70 cpr.

Lets hold the line and if possible, hold off on buying until the prices are a bit more reasonable (1.5x pre-covid pricing) as opposed to the 2x price we are seeing now.

Choprzul this is good stuff, a real public service to your fellow Calgunners.

Can I just ask what specifically you are tracking in each category? I am going to guess "handgun" = 9mm FMJ target ammo, "rifle" is 5.56 [is it M193 or equivalent?] and shotgun is 12 gauge basic 00 Buck. Are those all correct?
