There are gun stores that have that have a bucket of locks and will sell you one for $1 and write you a receipt and then refund you the dollar if you return the lock to the bucket after you take possession of the gun that you needed the lock receipt for.

In the past, I’ve signed the safe affidavit instead of buying more trash to throw away.

I have too, but that depends on what jurisdiction you are in.
It might work where you are, but the safe affidavit does not always work in other jurisdictions.
There are several different "safe storage" laws at play in different jurisdictions (federal, state, county or city) and the safe affidavits won't work in some jurisdictions or for some types of firearms.

You can also fill out an affidavit stating that you own a safe, and that it meets CA reqmts. For those who don't have their original receipts. I don't recall what info goes on the affidavit.

As already noted, that does not meet the Federal requirements for handguns.

See my rant at the wiki - http://wiki.calgunsfoundation.org/in...es.2C_and_Laws
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has yet to issue a regulation which recognizes 18 USC 921(a)(34)(C).

In practice, that means that California and Federal law are different on what is acceptable -- and safe for dealers to accept. For long guns, California FFLs may accept the safe affidavit; but for handguns, because BATFE has not yet ruled, the safe affidavit is NOT acceptable, and buyers may expect to purchase a gun lock with each handgun.

Anecdotal evidence at Calguns suggests that BATFE is in fact specifically refusing to accept the California safe affidavit. See this Calguns post for a reproduction of the letter BATFE has sent.

BATFE enforcement of this appears problematical; there seems to be no record keeping requirement to establish the lock presence on delivery in Federal paperwork.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Geez, I've got a box FULL OF LOCKS that were never used! I started out buying them---then I started returning them towards credit for most anything else as soon as I left the store with the gun...
This is just the stores way of making a little money from your PPT---many stores don't bother if the correct lock is already in the original box at time of transfer...

From the ATF letter referenced in Librarians wiki link.

The form used by the State of California Department of Justice with the standards set forth by section 977.50 of the California Code of Regulations may comply with California laws but does not comply with the laws and regulations set forth by ATF. This form is not an ATF form and is not an acceptable form in lieu of presenting a secure gun storage or safety device at the time of each firearm sales transaction.
There is NO 30 DAY receipt, or Ca DOJ LIST inclusion in the Fed 2005 child safety law. Refer to the bolded in above quote. ANY lock capable of incapacitating the handgun, by means of a combo or key, PRESENT. FULLY MEETS the CSLA of 2005.
