I dont know much about shotguns or rifles, so please enlighten me. I plan to use it for occassional range shooting and home defense. I definitely want something with stopping power. I also want something that uses ammo that is not too difficult to find at local stores (ie: Walmart, Big 5, etc.)

Please let me know what you guys think...shotgun or rifle, what model to look for, and why. Thanks!!!
You are just getting started, now you need a .40,10mm and a .45 then you can worry about shotguns!

This is the route I went. Started with the .40 then 9mm and now looking to go .45. And then gonna go to the wheel guns and start with a .38 snub then .357.

But to answer the OP, with the deals you can get.....especially at Big 5, get the shotgun first. If cost is not a factor, they have the Rem 870 HD usually sale price of $349. After that, get the Marlin .22 that is usually on sale for $149. Both rifles for $500 plus your taxes and fees.... doesnt seem too bad when you think of it that way. Look out for the rebates too. You then have best of both worlds, HD and also target plinker.

      Hope this helps...
