    Shotgun or Rifle???

I'm looking to purchase my 2nd gun and looking for feedback on what to get. I currently have a Sig P226 and I love it, but I'm looking for something new. I was thinking a shotgun or rifle since I have a handgun already.

I dont know much about shotguns or rifles, so please enlighten me. I plan to use it for occassional range shooting and home defense. I definitely want something with stopping power. I also want something that uses ammo that is not too difficult to find at local stores (ie: Walmart, Big 5, etc.)

Please let me know what you guys think...shotgun or rifle, what model to look for, and why. Thanks!!!

A great starter shotgun is a Mossberg 500. Big 5 usually has the best deal on them. Around $249.99 sometimes a bit less.

                Why not get both?

Yeah the Big 5 special is a great beginner.. Mossy or a Remmy will do just fine..

you are probably gonna end up buying both eventually and some more. Trust me. I've been on that road before.

                    Shotgun.

You can shoot it right away, ammo is plentiful.

Yep, I'd go 12ga Rem 870 or Moss 500. Find a friend or someone at a range where you can get the feel before you buy. A 22LR rifle ..10/22 is a good start if you want semi auto. -g

Well, since HD is one of your criteria and it is likely you live in a poplated area, my vote is for the shotgun.

Rifles are a lot more fun though.
