Procrastinated long enough, need to change out glock sights

Settled on these. They look pretty easy to install. May require a little filing. If I didn't want to do it myself, where in the LA, Long Beach, Cerritos area could I go?

Lastly, is a glock sight pusher tool worth it?I only have 1 glock

I’ve installed DP sights on several Glocks and a couple of Caniks. Very simple install, don’t think I had to fit any of them. I’ve used both a sight pusher and hammer and punch, either way you’ll be fine they go on easy and stay on.

Glock made sight pushers are made for official Glock sights, not a good fit for many aftermarket sights. Go with an aftermarket sight pusher or just a hammer and brass punch.

What does he charge? That would have to be a weekend trip for me.

The tool is worth it if you get other Glocks.

If you’re ever in the area, I’d swap them for you.

Installing Glock sights yourself is ridiculous easy. I've done it three times now and never had any issues. I've installed two sets of Heinie sights and one sight of AmeriGlo sights and never had a problem whatsoever.

This is the sight tool I purchased. Seems a little pricey upfront, but there are much more expensive sight tools out there, and after you install two sets of sights it's paid for itself.

I wrapped the slide in a dish towel and put it in the freezer after removing the front sight, recoil spring and barrel. Leave it in there for an hour or so and the rear sight comes out super easy. Run a q-tip through the channel to clean it out, add a drop of oil and insert the new rear sight. Install the front sight and don't forget to add some Loctite to the screw. I know people say that laser bore sights are junk, but that's what I'll use at home to make sure my sights are on, and every time they've been dead on once I'm at the range.

You may also like the Heinie Ledge Straight 8 sights. I like a blacked out rear sight, but like the two dot figure 8 sights even more. Way less busy than 3 dots and allows for very fast target acquisition while also being very accurate and consistent with tighter groups.

I prefer Trijicon's HD Night Sights. The first I had installed by a gunsmith. On my second gun, I did it myself as I bought the tools.

One thing I found that really helped with the installation of the rear sight was to lube both the bottom of the sight and the groove in the slide it goes into with molybdenum disulfide paste. It turned the job from one with tremendous friction to one that was easy to do yet the sight will still remain in place.

OP, that is exactly the set of Dawson sights I have on my G17. They work great, the price was right, and Dawson's customer service is excellent.

If you do the job yourself, be sure to use Blue or Purple Loctite on the front site screw--a little dab will do ya. Do not over-torque the screw: they are easy to break.

This thread reminds me I bought some Mep Pro night sights on sale for my Glock 19 right before C19 came along. Time to get to work on that project.

No tool needed. I did my rear sight with a hammer and wood dowel, the front is just a screw removed from under the slide.

Dawson includes a sight change tool with all of their sights. You could try that before buying an additional sight pusher. Any gunsmith should be able to change sights. It should cost no more than $10.

And a vice with soft jaws.

I will add, there are a lot of folks who can successfully just use a hammer, punch and vice to remove their rear sights, but I've also seen a LOT of mangled and marked up rear sights from individuals that use this technique.

Where are you living where a gunsmith only charges $10 to remove and install sights?! Just because changing Glock sights is easy, doesn't automatically mean it's going to be cheap. You do have to pay for the gunsmiths time. I can't think of any commercial gunsmith who would waste him time only charging $10.

I’m speaking from personal experience. Jones Fort in Redding, CA $10 Bastiani Arms in Redding, CA $10. So I think the real question is, where are you living that you’re paying $50 for sight install?

The key is to get to know your local gunsmiths. Have them know you. $1 a minute is also not a waste of their time. I’m sure if you’re waiting in line for BIG BOX FFL ABC for an install change, you could be paying more money. But I try to get to know the owners of all the FFL’s around. I spend a lot of money with my local stores. In fact on most occasions they have done simple work for me for free. All because I have given them a reason to.
