Colt Trooper Mk V, what can you tell me?

I have a chance to pick up Colt Trooper Blue Mk V, 8" barrel and pristine condition. Very possible only fired by Colt, with box.

    What can you tell me:
What is the difference between MK III vs MK V?
What are the dates of Mfg of MK III and MK V?

What is the fair market current value of 8" vs 6" and 4" barrels? Prices are all over the map? Seller does not know what they want, but since a family friend, I want to be fair.

Seems many more 4" & 6" barrels available, is the 8" less desirable?

I have a 4" Python that is a early 60s MFG and is a wonderful pistol with a very good trigger and beautiful Royal Blue. Had a another python 6" that was very nice too. The MK V is blued but not near the python finish. Trigger is not as nice either. Only shoot 38 SWC in the Python, and only rarely.

    What can you tell me?

    Thanks in advance !

MK V is a smaller frame than the MK III, closer to the S&W Model 19. Both of them used coil springs instead of the leaf spring used in the older Trooper, Python, etc. Sintered internal parts were used in the MK III while they were replaced by cast parts in the MK V. The trigger was improved with a shorter hammer drop. This made the trigger smoother and decreased the lock time.

I can't help you with values as my interests have been more into the older Colts.

        Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

          1. 8" not desirable to most collectors but there are some long tube guys tho.
          2. Mark V commands a premium over MKIIIs and are harder to find.
          3. Here is some info to get you started and compare to MKIII: https://coltfever.com/mark-v/

Colt Trooper Blue Mk V, 8".

Yep. That would be a real Colt Revolver alright.

All I can tell you is that I bought a Mk V 6" at Longs Drugs in 1983. My 1st handgun. It's a keeper.

In the collector world it seems that the shorter the barrel, the more desirable a revolver is. Generally speaking a 8" barreled gun is going to have the lowest value. I don't really know too much about the MkV Colts, but I haven't heard anything bad about them.

Go to Gunbroker and check on completed auctions where the gun actually sold and you will get a ballpark figure on what that one would be worth. One that is unfired outside of the test rounds at the factory is obviously going to command a premium over a shooter. I suspect that there isn't going to be very many many sales as they tend to be uncommon on the market. If truly still NIB, I think that it would possibly be worth as high as $1500-$2000, but that is purely a WAG.

I recall shooting my buddies and it was brutal ! The trigger guard mashed my middle finger against the trigger guard. Thats all I know .
