Except many of the folks asking the question aren’t seeking sincere answers when they insinuate the question to actually mean “Why would you want a puny pistol caliber in a rifle? My bigger, stronger 5.56/.300 BLK/.308 rifle is ballistically superior anyways.”

That’s less seeking a sincere answer and more baiting responses related to why anybody uses anything weaker than the most powerful cartridge a given firearm can fire.

      1) Consistency in manual of arms across multiple rifles and multiple calibers.

      2) For those in apartments and condominiums, the terminal ballistics of a 9mm hollow point lessen the chance of overpenetration through flesh vs. a .223/5.56 round.

      3) In normal times, you can save money by practicing with your self-defense rig for less money by duplicating your exact .223/5.56 upper in 9mm.

      4) If you're anticipating recoil and it's degrading accuracy, one strategy is to switch to a softer-recoiling caliber for a moment and then switch back. A benefit of a 9mm AR - or AR upper - would be consistency of physical manipulations while using this strategy.

      5) Those with disabilities can still defend themselves with a lighter, softer-recoiling, and quieter firearm - with a weapon they're used to carrying, or that's common to America.

      6) It's fun.

      7) It's America. (Insert picture of bald eagle clutching an AR with AC/DC on stage in the background.)

      8) Flexibility during economic uncertainty is important. As we've seen recently, there may be times when you can get 9mm and just can't get .223/5.56 - or vice versa.

      9) I could imagine someone deciding to carry an AR in 9mm - with a scoped 6.5 Grendel upper in a backpack.

I can't agree more! The Ruger PCC is absolutely underestimated for self-defense work, in my opinion. Fast, stupid accurate, takedown model, easily upgradeable with a light and a red dot, absolutely intuitive... and with interface common to the 10/22 and, to a slightly lesser extent, the Mini 14... Glock mags which mean anything from 10 rounds to 33 rounds and beyond. One of my absolutely favorite firearms.

i can cast bullets for 9mm and make ammo cheaper than buying 22lr till primer avalibility went a bit off the rails

i wanted a 9mm rifle that used pistol magazines since the days of the camp 9 but later on found out they were not what they seemed less durable

then heard about the 9mm 30 carbine thing that took beretta magazines but then found out its quality was lacking

the hi-point doesn't use any of my pistol magazines

it just seemed prudent at the time i made it psa had a sale on a 9mm upper

if a better option comes along that accepts a 226 mag i'll be interested

Like so many special forces use UZI or MP5, good for close combat
areas and urban warfare. So a 9mm vs a 22 cal makes sense.

I think a suppressed 9mm SBR is excellent for home defense.
Home invasions often include multiple intruders just like terrorist acts.

Yes, that's exactly what I just said in my post--That people who ask this question are either:

                a) Ignorant of the facts around PCCs (which seems to be the camp you fall in, as you were wanting to find out why people use them), or:
                b) Just being intentionally obtuse and asking in a condescending way.

It looks like you got a little butthurt at my use of the word "ignorant." Keep in mind that word, in and of itself, isn't an insult--It just means there's something you don't know about a particular topic. I am ignorant about what it's like to walk into a voting booth and vote Democrat. I am ignorant about Japanese sports cars. You were ignorant, before starting this thread, about why people use PCC ARs. Got it?

Colt originally developed the 9mm into the AR platform to compete with HK in the LE/Military sub-gun market. It had the advantage that the manual of arms / training and familiarity of the M16/M3 AR platforms in the military and LE communities transferred easily to the 9mm AR sub-gun.

Why 9mm AR? Because you already have one or several in 5.56, .308, 7.62x39, 5.45x39, 6.5 CM, 12 ga, .22lr and Airsoft.

Well that's another advantage of pistol calibers. A 5.56 needs a minimum 10" barrel to reach its effective velocity. You could have a 4" barrel 9mm AR pistol and be at an effective velocity. 300 BO needs about an 8". A little less but not as short as a pistol round.

We're limited to 16" PCCs here in CA for the most part. So a strike against the pistol calibers in that regard. But if you wanted the most compact shorty SBR or braced pistol in a free state, 9mm would be the ticket.

If I could own whatever NFA stuff I wanted, you can bet I'd have a 4-6" 9mm PCC. Probably loaded with 9BPLE and 147 gr for a suppressor. Or maybe an integral suppressor, now I'm just dreaming.

Use at indoor ranges with backstops not rated for rifle calibers and on steel targets down to ten yards.
