    Older LongGun Transfer/Registration

    Hello Fellow Calgunners,

I need some advice regarding older firearms.

Long story short, my sister-in-laws uncle passed unfortunately and had a few firearms. His wife knew that I was a bit of a firearm collector and wants to sell me his firearms (all are long firearms, hunting style rifles and one shotgun, no handguns at all). Their ages are between 1930 to 1970 and were purchased by them between 1960 to 1975.

I wanted to ask what would be the best way to transfer these to me or how to check they are clean (just for record purposes) since paperwork can't be found for them. I did ask about the older firearms and it seems they were just bought way before I was even born back when firearm laws were less intrusive for long guns.

They are not in my possession, we are both in California.

I don't know if intra-familar transfer is out of the question and doesn't apply to an extended family by marriage, or if a DOJ Voluntary Registration Form would work.

Anyways I would like to go about it the right way without getting either of us in trouble.

    Thanks in advance.

First off the Intrafamiliar transfer is off the table for you.

If you have/ get a C&R FFL and CA COE you can go get them and register them with the CA DOJ. In this route it would cost you $19 for all the firearms transferred.

If you don't have or not planning on getting a C&R and COE you'll need to do a private party transfer at a dealer. You will pay $37.19 for the DROS and $10 for every long gun transferred.

So, 10 long guns via PPT will cost you $137.19
To get a C&R & COE could cost you $116 plus the $19 registration fee for a total of $135. If you are going to buy more than 10 it's cheaper to go this way.

There's really no way to check them. If you don't trust the people you're buying from don't buy from them.
    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

Hey morrcarr67, thanks for the quick reply. Awesome that actually helps, I really appreciate the information. And yeah I trust her, it's more of just having every little corner covered in case of anything which I doubt will happen, but just because this is CA, I wanted to see if I could cover all my bases haha.

      Thanks again.
