Am I safe making this bet???

I would like to be able to offer a challenge to my anti-gun friends when they whine about how easy it is to get guns, and how "common sense" dictates tighter controls...

So tell me if I've missed anything in this challenge...my friends are the kind who like to win bets, so please think carefully..

Here's what I'd like to say:

OK. If you are sure it's easy to buy a gun, and you're not just parroting what CNN tells you, here's an offer you can't refuse...

If you can legally buy a gun and a box of ammo for it and bring it back here to me within a week from right now, I'll give you $10,000.

If you find that you can't, you agree to take a two-hour private shooting lesson, at a private range, from a qualified instructor. You agree to take the lesson with an open mind, and do it within a month. You will pay him his standard fee, and I'll help you set it up.

    OK? Is it a bet?

Note: this to be issued in California to California residents, none are cops.

Am I safe making this? Any way they can wriggle through it that I haven't considered??? Black powder? Antiques? Anything?

Yeah, I worried about exactly that. One guy will spend two days on the phone fighting for a $10 discount he thinks he should have gotten.

That's why I added "a box of ammo" to rule out muzzle loaders

Are you going to accept an antique (which has no waiting period) or is there some stipulation that this be a modern firearm?

Antique guns can be bought without an FFL or waiting period.

Any gun 1898 or older is an antique.

Cartridge firearms have have been commonly available since before the 1870s.

If it were me I'd find an antique Colt Single Action Army for $5,000, buy a box of 45 LC cowboy ammo, and collect my 10k from you.

Or an antique 12 gauge with 2-3/4 inch chambers and a box of promo loads (not necessarily safe, but definitely fits your criteria).

OP I'm glad you bounced this idea off of all of us salty old grumps.

Also you didn't say that they couldn't go OPLAW a firearm/ammo from their gun owning parents, grandparents, great grandparents, kids, grandkids, etc. That is instantaneous as well.

I like where your coming from, but sticking your neck out there to prove a point could be an expensive lesson....a $10,000 dollar lesson.

OK, those are the kinds of help I needed. I didn't consider antiques for which you can still buy ammo. My friends are determined enough to the western six-shooter deal on me....

So, I'll specify "modern" gun...That enough to do the job???

Thank you guys, this has been fun. That's why I asked here, I figured a bunch of people would know the angles I didn't consider.

How are they legally going to acquire the ammunition for a modern gun within a week?
