It's also that the limit applies in a strange way since it doesn't apply to the configuration without a pistol grip (featureless), but applies to the configuration with fixed magazine.

The configuration you were describing was featureless and it does *not* have capacity limit.

Asking for a friend that lives in CA (I moved to AZ 3 years ago).
I don't know the circumstances, just trying to answer his questions and I'm out the CA loop.
In order to not be an "assault weapon" (featureless) in CA the center fire rifle cannot have:
-Flash-hider
-Vertical forward grip
-Pistol grip
-Folding or collapsing stock
-Hold no more than 20 rounds.
What I'm unsure of is if it meets all the above, does it still have to be fixed mag or bullet buttoned?

Did you look at the top of the screen and check out the AW flowchart? Someone went though a lot of effort to answer the questions so that thread after thread of the same questions could be figured out easily.
