    1. Treat all guns as if loaded (even when you know they aren't).
    2. Never point the muzzle at anything you aren't willing to destroy.
    3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target.
    4. Know your target and what is beyond it (avoid all collateral damage).

Thanks for those that made recommendations on this thread.**

I can vouch for the Action Targets Dueling Tree.* A few years back, I was fortunate enough to find one on Craigslist for a good deal.* Mine is the Heavy Duty version with the AR550 paddles.* It's pretty much indestructible and weighs 110lbs.* I like the aggressive forward lean on it that directs the fragmentation downward.* It's fairly unwieldy to transport when assembled, but worth the effort so as to not mess with hardware in the field.* I've read that some guys use hitch pins to make setup and takedown easier, but I don't see how that can provide the nice tight compression needed to keep the base steady (the base is made up of three pieces that connect with two bolts through the upright of the target).

As far as targets and stands:

I researched the different recommendations for steel targets that others had made in this thread, and ended up going with JC Targets out of Washington State.* After reviewing the website, I had some questions about the dimensions of the slots in the targets.* I called the number on the website and the owner picked up the phone in like two rings.* He was very informative and has a flat fee Priority Mail shipping fee of under 20 bucks for any order!***I ordered the 12 x 20 torso (66% IPSC)*and 8" gong.* I also ordered two of his special T-Post protectors.* These AR500 sleeves fit over the T-Post and prevent damage from spall or misdirected rounds (i.e. misses, lol).

Best selection of AR500 Steel Targets for all your shooting needs. High-quality AR500 steel targets available at great prices. Made in the USA.

      Here's the torso:**https://jcsteeltargets.com/66-ipsc-s...ook-3-8-thick/

      Here's the gong:**https://jcsteeltargets.com/8-round-s...ook-3-8-thick/

      Here's the special T-Post protectors:**https://jcsteeltargets.com/ar500-t-p...r-rifle-rated/

Note that he's made some improvements and the T-Post protector shown on the website is not what he's putting out now.* Look at my photos - you can see that the steel forms a closed triangle of protection for all three sides of the T-Post, not just the front.

JC shipped the same day I ordered and it was at my door in 3 days Priority Mail.* It arrived well packaged and protected - shrinkwrapped on a slab of what appeared to be 1/4" particle board.

For a base, I didn't like the idea of 2x4s splintering so I wanted to go with T-Posts.* The challenge was how to make the base portable.* I didn't want to drive T-Posts in the ground and then pull them out each time I shoot (I shoot at a range where I cannot leave my setup in place).* I looked high and low for a portable T-Post mount and found one at Hangfast Targets out of West Virginia.* I liked his hanger system too, so I bought a couple in yellow.* And a couple adapters so I can use 1x2s to hang paper targets as well.* His T-Post mount is adjustable for all three axes.* Pretty cool.* I ordered on a Monday and it arrived here to Commiefornia on a Friday.* Hangfast also charges a flat shipping fee of like less than 20 bucks.

      Here's the T-Post Stand:**https://hangfasttargets.com/p/t-post-stand

      Here's the hangers:**https://hangfasttargets.com/products/standard-hanger

I combined the JC targets and JC T-Post protectors with the Hangfast T-Post base and hangers and voila!* a portable mount that will withstand any pistol round thrown at it and most rifles too (at appropriate distances and velocities of course).

I tried to do the pics in order so you can see the steps of the assembly, but they loaded out of order...
