The cheap stuff on Amazon don't have enough power. You will be into the thousands of dollars to engrave metal.

Yup, all of those low priced ones have 5-15w of power. You're going to need an engraver with a minimum of 50w to engrave into metal. And, those 50w units still limitations.
        Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

What are the specs required by BATFE and CA DOJ for serial numbers?

What font size and how deep does it need to be engraved?

Have you seen the laser engraved - stippled Glock?
          Or plastic mags.

If you get one, you can have a side business

            Found it

Identification Markings Placed on Firearms (98R-341P) 27 CFR Parts 178 and 179
            T.D. ATF-461; Ref: Notice No. 877
            RIN 1512-AB84
AGENCY: Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), Department of the Treasury. ACTION: Final rule (Treasury decision).
SUMMARY: The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) is amending the regulations to prescribe minimum height and depth requirements for identification markings placed on firearms by licensed importers and licensed manufacturers. Specifically, we are requiring a minimum height of 1/16th inch1 and a minimum depth of .003 inch for serial numbers and a minimum depth of .003 inch for all other required markings. We believe that these minimum standards are necessary to ensure that firearms are properly identified in accordance with the law. In addition, the final regulations will facilitate our ability to trace firearms used in crime.
DATES: This rule is effective January 30, 2002.

Take a look at one of the little CNC engravers. Same stepping motors etc as the laser but basically uses a Dremel type drive to cut the letters. It won't cut as small as a laser but 1/16" cutter should do just fine.

Check on ebay. Under $200. They say not for metal but you don't have to cut very deep and if you can slow the travel speed down it should work fine.

                          Good idea

Let me ask you. Can the travel speed be slowed down on most of these CNC routers? How do you determine which ones can be slowed down and which ones can't?
