Perspective on ammo shortage

Ammo was plentiful and cheap in the last 6yrs that I've been in this, what are you talking about? -
There are a lot more new gun owners that when they started with their first gun didn't have ANY ammo AT ALL. So any purchase from this class of owners pretty much bought ammo with the addition of a new gun.
Then, when COVID and Riots it was a perfect storm of police in the North West ignoring calls for service and basically telling their public you are on your own.
Our society is on a tipping point of completely coming apart. Hell, even for me locally traffic on the freeway was stopped by aggressive protests and attacking people in their cars on the freeway (which I only missed being caught in by a few hours).
It is just panicked demand. I am participating in it myself, and while I'm not paying inflated reloading component prices I am keeping an eye out for normal priced retailers on-line, and snatch it up the moment I see it. Because well, I'm Californian and have had a hoarding mentality since 2008, and with this all now going on I've basically decided to DOUBLE my ammo/component reserve.
When you consider hundreds of thousands of folks thinking like me, well, that turns out to be a lot of demand for raw materials that go into the manufacture of ammo. Before there was Polymer there was Accuracy.Comment

I am not optimistic like so many here. I will be 70 in March. Had guns since age of 7.
I think we are seeing the forever here. No way aversge Joe is paying $3, $4, $5 a round for critical defense... $2+ for white box. Average Americans don't have much disposable income. They aren't paying thousands for ammo.
C&R guns are disappearing too.. I don't think it's all collectors buying.I think it's average Joe buying any gun they can.
If it is, indeed, panic from the election then it will continue because Dems control Washington as well as the future election process. Guaranteed when Puerto Rico gains statehood.
The end of gun fun forever.. For most of here in lower income middle America at least.Comment

Ammo was cheap as **** and everywhere last year just before the lock down."Bangarang Peter!"Comment

I would really like to find out how much Covid shutdown production. Riots and election cycles jump started this crunch but the only way we stay on it is if production stays offline.Comment

This.
Then the left released Covid to gain control and slow the firearms industry.

Right after the Walmart El Paso
Shooting they were basically paying customers to come buy the ammo.
Got over 12k federal 9mm for 8 cpr
5.56 federal was 12cpr.Comment

i think what OP is referring to is, before obama, prices were actually lower than the prices during the trump slump. for example. 9mm for walmart could be had all day for 10-15cpr, 12 gauge birdshot around 15cpr, 22lr was like 2cpr, wolf 7.62x39 was 10cpr. even during the trump slump 2017 and 2018, normal cheap prices were almost double that.
OP, i think it's just an increase demand, inflation, and now less retailers. i'm assuming production is up, but not to the degree to counter those other factors.Comment

You must have been asleep, there have been long stretches when ammo was available and cheap compared to today. During most of the Obama years brass 5.56 was around $300-340 a case of 1000. During the Trump years it went up a little due to inflation.Someone please help me gain a little bit of perspective regarding the ammo shortage. It feels like there has been a lack of ammo on the market since the Obama administration. When ammo became available was extremely expensive. If you could find it in the first place. During the Trump administration, it really didn’t get better. If tens of millions of rounds are being produced by manufacturers working overtime, where is it? I know there are hoarders out there, but for all that ammo? It just doesn’t feel right. Or is this a case of altered perception due to my advancing age.
I was buying 9mm practice ammo incredibly cheep. 7.62 NATO M80, $300 for 500 rounds, Federal Gold Metal Match at $1 a round and occasionally LESS. $200 for 1000 rounds of Wolf 7.62X39.
The biggest glitch during those years was the .22LR shortage turned out to be a lot like the Toilet Paper Boogaloo, it just lasted longer.
I just kept stacking everything until I couldn't justify buying any more ammo.
When COVID hit I stopped shooting.
Even if I went back to shooting a couple hundred rounds every other weekend I could go for years and years.
I guess you were napping.Last edited by ScottsBad; 02-22-2021, 11:29 AM.sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.Comment

Unfortunately, that's part of the plan. Price out middle America, keep kids from learning to responsibly handle firearms. Keep kids from learning the history of America and how America keeps itself free.I am not optimistic like so many here. I will be 70 in March. Had guns since age of 7.

Fortunately, I was able to teach my kids before the Commies gained power. My kids are in college now and believe in the Second and what it's intended for. They have their own guns now.
Troubled times are here and they are only going to get worse unless people wake up.sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.Comment
