Really depends on what you want out of your functionality and what risks you are willing to take. Do you want to clear jams, quickly reload but don't think your weapon will be scrutinized by LE? Or would you want your compliance device to be less disputable and be inconvenienced? I went the latter, I refuse to use ARmaglok because of the ability to fire the weapon and remove the magazine is non-compliant by my interpretation of the penal code. That minimal kind of "gap" separation device is in the "no no" pile for me. I have used Prince Patriot Mag release and ultimately digging the Maglatch. Maglatch's magrelease is not milspec and is short by a few millimeters so it's ugly from the serial side, but the design is minimalistic and non intrusive.

A maglock works better for me. I'm still waiting for the definition of "disassemble the action".Really depends on what you want out of your functionality and what risks you are willing to take. I don't know why you are giving me attitude, I'm simply probing and asking questions. You said: " Disassembling the action means the gun has no more "action". Meaning it will not operate, it will not fire." Ok, a maglock does exactly that. So why is it questionable? Separating the lower from the upper is disassembled. Why is this even an issue? If you can still fire the gun, the action is not disassembled.
And you can fire the AR without the mag catch in place. And you can hold a mag or drum in place and fire the gun until the mag runs out, without a mag catch. Not having a mag catch means nothing.
You don't get to remove a rando, inconsequential part or screw and say "look, I have disassembled the action!" Disassembling the action means the gun has no more "action". Meaning it will not operate, it will not fire.Comment

The wording doesn't fit, it should say magazines unable to be removed before the action is disabled, not disassembled, the action is considered the bolt carrier and bolt assembly, technically it doesn't make sense.I don't know why you are giving me attitude, I'm simply probing and asking questions. I'm not sure of that. Locking the bolt to the rear is disabling the action, so I don't think that is going fly.Comment

I use Gen 4 w/ kingpin and red loctite on 2 builds. I'm debating on drilling out the sets crew as instructed on the package. Here is a good discussion on legality https://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/....php?t=1489327Last edited by SharedShots; 03-01-2021, 5:01 PM.Let Go of the Status Quo!

The time and money spent to remove and replace with a brake would likely cost more than to purchase a maglock. Of course the option of doing this is there, but some prefer to have an original upper assembly with a flash hider. A maglock will provide that. In addition you still get to use the pistol grip instead of a wrap, fin or monster man grip.
Also as BrokerB said; you don't have the option with an AR pistol. Maglocks are the only solution.
The cost of going featureless with the current setup is more likely north of $120.00 when you include a monsterman grip, wrap or fin, a new muzzle brake and the time and/or money to either purchase a fixed stock or pinning your current one vs spending $60.00 or possibly less for a maglock.

What we do know is that for years AR's have been modified with a pin before being shipped into California, California has known this and has accepted it by default.
After the rifles arrive some distributors fit them with faster pin systems.
Anyone with doubts isn't looking at the facts. The fact that the law, written by individuals that weren't familiar with the different actions that rifles have, lever, bolt, crack barrel shotgun, AR simi auto gas operated.
I know several LEO's that sell maglock AR's, they own gun stores, most only sell the pull ring pin system.Comment

From their site:
"The CompMag has an internal locking mechanism that locks into your firearm with just one screw. Super easy installation. No holes to drill. It can also be easily removed by opening the action and removing the screw from the inside."
Notice the words they use "opening the action" and not disassembly. I'd say the term opening the action vs disassembling was well thought through and for good reason. Had they used "disassembling" their liability would probably be right out front. They have made a significant distinction though, pulling the rear pin and pivoting the upper from the lower appears not to be disassembly, it is only opening the action. For anyone who has been in the military, would you say pulling the rear pin and pivoting the upper be acceptable as disassembly if you told one of your troops to disassemble an M16?
What this all comes down to is: is opening the action the same thing as disassembly?Let Go of the Status Quo!

"A fixed magazine is defined as an ammunition feeding device contained in, or permanently attached to, a firearm in such a manner that the device cannot be removed without disassembly of the firearm action."The "lifted upwards and away from the lower receiver" example provided by CADOJ seems to be only half the definition. "interrupted and will not function" has not been satisfied with some maglock devices, especially ones that only require the upper receiver to pivot a few degrees from the lower - the firing pin can still be struck by the hammer, thus the action is not interrupted. ONTOP of that, ARMaglock GEN4 says the BCG can still travel into the buffer to clear malfunctions, a clear sign that the firing pin axis is still within strike zone."'Disassembly of the firearm action' means the fire control assembly is detached from the action in such a way that the action has been interrupted and will not function. For example, disassembling the action on a two part receiver, like that on an AR-15 style firearm, would require the rear take down pin to be removed, the upper receiver lifted upwards and away from the lower receiver using the front pivot pin as the fulcrum, before the magazine may be removed.
