Nothing is better than MSA Sordin's. I wear nothing else.

The Supreme Pro IV is what I recommend.

How does everyone around you concentrate on their shooting if that is all you are wearing.

I have not had a chance to try them out at the range, but my initial impression is that they do seem to have better protection than the Peltor 6P. They also have greater amplification of low-level sounds. They seem to be better constructed, and I much prefer the battery compartment location of the Leights. They run on 2 AAA batteries, compared to 4 AAA's for the Peltor 6P.

I use the Howard Leight ones but arent you suppose to be able to use the electronics and shoot with it. When I turn it on everything is louder even the gunshots. When does it cut the sound off?

Don't they automatically cut out the sound whenever noise above a certain dB is detected?

I'm sure those are great, but they're -slightly- above the <$100 budget I had in mind. :-)

I use Sordins. Had them for years with zero complaints.

Another +1 for Peltor. Received a pair a couple of years ago as a Christmas present, been using them ever since.

I have a pair of these and they ROCK! It's especially nice that they amplify. I can wear plugs under the muffs at the indoor range and still hear the brass tinkle when it hits the floor.

I have used some electronic ones at American Shooting Center. They sucked. They didn't provide much protection, and amplified the shooting noise and the echos of the shooting noise. I used several pairs over the course of 2 outings there, and just went back to my own earplugs. The woman working there said that they had had a lot of complaints about them, and were not planning on getting any more.

The electronics don't reduce sound any, they just amplify. With electronic muffs, the protection is never better than when the power is off.

Whatever the base NRR rating is, that's all you get. Many electronic muffs (like the popular Nordin Supreme Pro and Peltor Tac6S) have very low NRRs, like 19 or 22, and that's not nearly enough for me. You can get some improvement by adding the gel earcups.

The amplification should only work on low level sounds, and it should be limited to a maximum amount of amplification, so if it makes things painfully loud when it's on, there may be a problem with the muffs.

The only way I can shoot low NRR muffs like the Nordins is with earplugs under them, then turn up the volume until I can hear over the earplugs. That lets the low level sound through, but gives more protection from the loud sounds.
