    Is 17 hm 2 / 17 mach 2 dead

have a new savage stainless 17HM 2 / 17 mach 2 with 12 boxes ammo. Never shot it. Will have to do something or take it to Texas to shoot. Lead ammo good there.

You know, last time I saw .17 ammo on the shelf (like last month) there was quite a stack of the .17 HM2 - I really think the HM2 will outlast the .17 WSM simply because it doesn’t need a dedicated action. Sportsman’s has had the 15.5 gr NTX load before.

No experience with HM2, but the lead free loads for .17 Hornet are crap.

My HM2's are my solid <100 yard go to for squirrels. Much more accurate at longer distances than .22 if crosswinds are light. I got caught short during the last ammo shortage and have remedied that situation. Rimfire rounds are the only thing that I'm beholden to for ammo purchases but shouldn't need some for quite some time and hope to be out of CA by the time I need more.

I bought a barrel for my contender last year trying to figure out a non lead option for small game using the hornady NTX 15.5 gr. ammo. needless to say the first group I shot came in at under an inch. and out to 100 its a lazer.

somebody should make a California Special

neck down a .27 nail gun cartridge to hold enough powder to send 40 gr .224 at 2700.

                        in a rimfire.

.17 Hornet gives you a 20 grain at 3650 and almost mirror images the drop of a 55 gr .223. Yeah, centerfire, but so cheap to reload it's not funny.

You mean, Winchester should have skipped the .17 WSM and done a .20 or .22 WSM (the WSM uses the .27 nail driver case) yes I totally agree. Of course I still want a straight wall WSM in 6.5 or .27 cal. Either way would make for a rimfire that could skirt AW issues

Vudoo thinks enough of it to chamber their comp gun.

                              I prefer 17 HMR.
