Pay before DROSing the long gun (I don’t think they do Handgun PPTs). Check the bills when you count them. If in doubt, go with someone to double count and use the marker.
FFL doesn’t need to be involved in the selling process. -
1) Avoid using Big-5.
2) Buyer & seller meet, buyer inspects gun
3a) Buyer discretely pays seller, seller discretely counts it
3b) Seller puts money in pocket
3c) Buyer & seller go into FFL to complete paperwork
4) Buyer & seller continue on their day
It's really quite common sense. After the inspection, repeat the price. That's a pretty universal prompt to pay up. If the buyer doesn't hand you the cash pretty quickly, why would you walk into a gunshop with him and start signing forms? After you're paid, why would you want the money "placed in an area where it can’t be removed"? I'd want to remove it - into my pocket.---------------------

Cant use Big 5 for handguns. But...
1. Meet outside the facility and do an inspection in the trunk or whatever, BEFORE YOU ENTER the business for PPT.
2. Keep your money in an envelope on your person and exchange in or outside the store. That way the store can’t bring up “sales tax”.
3. Go inside and start DROSComment

if you exchange money INSIDE the FFL, the FFL can charge you the tax, although they usually ask you to step outside. No the FFL will not check for fake bills, ask for $100 with the hologram strip can not be forged as easily as old $20s. Also the iTrader rating, as a zero, I would not buy from you.Comment

Buyer inspects and pays before dros. If your that paranoid no one should do business with you. Big 5 is my go to ffl for long uns. Just call first to be sure they have someone there to do the dros. If accepting money be discreet if inside ffl. Only way ffl can charge sales tax is if firearm entered into their books. Never in 50 transaction has ffl said tax.Comment

This person is already worried about getting jacked and you guys are talking about passing a handgun and money around in a parking lot. OP, walk into FFL. Place gun on counter. Buyer inspects, pays you money, you then sign paperwork. I would never do business with anybody that wanted to "inspect my gun" in the parking lot. GTFO.Cant use Big 5 for handguns. But...

ETA: It amazes me that people think buying firearms is something that needs to be done in the shadows, discreetly passing money and gun back and forth, out of the prying eyes of the FFL. Does anyone think that the FFL doesn't know what happens in a PPT? Does anyone think the FFL wants people skulking aroung passing weapons and money around outside of their establishment?Last edited by AregularGuy; 12-05-2020, 7:11 AM.All posts dedicated to the memory of Stronzo Bestiale

I would never exchange money outside of the store. While I have only done a few transactions, I have never heard of an FFL charging tax on a PPT. An urban myth, nothing more. Anyone here that has actually had an FFL charge or try to charge sales tax just because the money was exchanged inside of the store, please tell us of your experience.if you exchange money INSIDE the FFL, the FFL can charge you the tax, although they usually ask you to step outside. Well said, agree completely. Stop with the nonsense. I conduct the entire transaction inside the store. Inspection, money exchange and paper work. I would never consider a parking lot inspection or money transfer.Last edited by 003; 12-05-2020, 9:52 AM.Comment

Some FFLs prefer not to see the money exchange, mostly because of the potential tax issue: if the FFL might be considered to have done more than the statutory minimum, that could be a taxable service.
I have done 3 PPT; all were parking-lot money transfers.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!Comment

Most of the time FFL checks the gun, leaves you guys to your business and comes back when you are ready for paperwork. That has been my experience at several different FFL"s.All posts dedicated to the memory of Stronzo Bestiale
