Why So Many Mags?

Like you, I have 10-15 mags per handgun. Keep a couple loaded with hollow points for the nightstand gun. Others used for the range, and then have 2 dedicated for dry-fire practice with snap caps, and the rest are spares.
Not sure why people have hundreds of mags for one firearm, but interested to hear what the rationale is. Maybe I'll learn something.Last edited by Vinnie Boombatz; 12-02-2020, 2:57 PM.sigpic -
OP, you kind of nailed it.
I personally keep around a hundred mags loaded for my rifles.
I shoot often (in my backyard), and it is nice to just grab loaded from the shelf, rather than have to load
As my stock depletes, I have a loading party (mostly by myself).
As far as handguns, i normally keep around 20-30 loaded, for the same reasons as above.
I also have load out vests in different vehicles, for the truck rifle.
Just depends on your preparedness level and what you feel being prepared is

10 mags per firearm per person should be enough.
If you have a common firearm for all such as a AR. I would keep.an extra 10 or 20.
When prices drop again.Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

There is no really good reason to own that many. I don't even own more than 5 for any particular gun. I can't carry that many - I don't run around my house in a plate carrier and NVG's clearing rooms while in my Underoos.
People like to stock up or hoard all sorts of things for different reasons. Look at toilet paper - people start to worry that they can't get anymore, or they won't have enough. Oh, they may try to cite spare parts or something like that, but the reality is if they wanted spare parts, they could just buy spare parts.
I actually downsized my stockpile of guns, mags, and ammo. Like I said - I can only carry so much. I don't have 20 guys that I need to load out for my own private commando force. So I just focus on the couple of guns I can actually carry, and just have a few mags for each. Guns that I don't shoot very often - I just keep 1 or 2 mags for those.
I may be biased, though. I only load 5 rds per mag when I go to the range, because I'm actually trying to improve my groups.
That's just me. Other forum members won't be able to sleep at night if they don't have at 100k rounds of Lake City XM855 ammo in their bunker aka garage, along with 100+ mags to go with it.Comment

I have no idea what you are talking about.

Fixed that for you.

Rookie.
Maybe not the best idea. You don't know how your mags will function when full.I may be biased, though. I only load 5 rds per mag when I go to the range, because I'm actually trying to improve my groups.
Untrue! That's just me. Other forum members won't be able to sleep at night if they don't have at 100k rounds of Lake City XM855 ammo in their bunker aka garage, along with 100+ mags to go with it.
I don't like M855 much, and REALLY don't like XM855. So I have 100k of other stuff.Comment

I blame ARs.
The thin, aluminum magazines for ARs were thought of as disposable, they can't even stand up to being stepped on.
But the fact remains, for almost any firearm, my Garand, for example, if you loaded a clip and fired, over and over, the pressed steel clip is going to wear out before the firearm does. And many of us have standard magazines from the 1990s, and earlier. I wanted as many as I could get my hands on because I knew I couldnt replace them.Originally posted by tony270It's easy to be a keyboard warrior, you would melt like wax in front of me, you wouldn't be able to move your lips.Originally posted by repubconservPrint it out and frame it for all I careOriginally posted by el chivoI don't need to think at all..XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXOriginally posted by pjsigYou are talking to someone who already won this lame conversation, not a brick a wall. I have a minimum of 10 mags for each firearm. I hate spending time at the range reloading when I can be shooting. I can usually reload during the ceasefires.
Then I add another 10 for my SD guns. They are loaded with SD ammo. I would rather have too many than not enough. I have places around the house where the mags are stashed.
Then whenever I come across a sale I will buy a few more just to keep a supply on hand to replace any that are getting old. I treat them like ammo. One can never have too much on hand. Buy when it is cheap so you have it when supplies are short. If they are selling for high enough when supplies are short I might even sell a few and stash that money to stock up again when supplies are back in stock and prices are reasonable.Anyone can look around and see the damage to the state and country inflicted by bad politicians.
A vote is clearly much more dangerous than a gun.
Why advocate restrictions on one right (voting) without comparable restrictions on another (self defense) (or, why not say 'Be a U.S. citizen' as the requirement for CCW)?
