PPT 10-Day Wait: What Items to Leave at FFL?

    Hi,

I'm new to firearms purchasing. So far, I've completed 1 PPT and initiated a 2nd PPT. The second FFL asked if I wanted to take the case. I said no.. (based on a friend's advice), and left everything (magazines, palm swells, loader, etc) at the FFL. But that made me wonder about the proper protocol or etiquette...

    1. What IS the right protocol or etiquette? What should I leave at the FFL during the 10 day wait period? A friend who's done several PPT's had advised me that I should leave everything but maybe take the magazines. Is this correct?

2a. Does anyone ever lock everything up in the box until the end of the waiting period to avoid misplaced items? (sorry if this is a dumb q)

2b. Has anyone experienced problems during the wait period? One Yelp review for the 2nd FFL complained that the seller had returned to the FFL to take back the case during the 10 day wait period against the agreement. (I completely trust my seller so only bringing this up as an example of odd things that may happen at FFL's)

2c. If the FFL is a gun range, do they ever "test" your firearm during this wait period?

    3. Any advice to avoid future problems would be appreciated.

    Thank you in advance.
And thank you Calguns for the wealth of knowledge and resources.

Leave the gun with the box or case and any brochure/propaganda and the factory lock or the lock you had to buy with it. Locking it or not won't matter as you have to leave the key for them. And maybe a mag to do the safety check, but some cool LGS will safety check with similar firearm if mag is not available.
    Take everything else with you.
You can leave a tiny clear tape inside the tip of the barrel to check later if it has been fired or not, but even it has been, nothing much you can do.

2c. I'm pretty sure they don't.....unless it was some once in a lifetime type of guns...., but with that thought in my head I try to avoid PPT at ranges unless no choice. I have done it once, but good thing the range was out of 9mm lol.

Just the other day I came across an older thread on here and they were talking about horror stories from FFLs during the 10 day dros period. There was a story of a FFL taking the firearm out of the safe in the 10 day drop period and show a potential customer or to play with it/shoot it. One of the worst ones, guy came to pick up after the 10 days and found bunch of nicks and scratches on his new firearm.

Thank you @S.O.A.R. for the advice.

But your not recommending leaving at a gun range and @caspa mentioning the horror stories make me feel a bit uneasy about having left it at a gun range FFL. Unfortunately I had to roll with what was convenient for the seller. He seemed like a past customer so hopefully they'll respect that.

If you want to ensure it wont be fired you can take out the firing pin. I also prefer to leave only the firearm. I take the mags and everything. You can always bring a mag during pick up if need be. Back in the day when frames were ok to transfer I used to take the slide off prior to the transfer. But you need to do this prior to going into the ffl as some won't let you alter the gun or take stuff. I wouldn't worry about locking it because the ffl needs access to it.

But what happens while its there is your loss. I got effed one time as there's no way to prove anything. I suppose I could've taken pictures to document condition. But this one time I ppt'd a real nice, rare and off roster 1911 and I ended up paying dearly. I fully inspected the gun prior to transfer and everything was fine. When I picked it up and examined it at home it had a rung barrel. I couldn't prove anything so I also ended up buying a new barrel and paying a smith to fit it.

After that I only go to shops I know are gtg.
Man, this place has gone bonkers.

Thank you for the advice. Wish I had known this prior to the PPT. Unfortunately the FFL is 3.5 hours away so can't do much now and hope for the best. And it is a gun that I've been wanting for a while. I hope that they'll be respectful.

Leave the case . lock and mag. Take everything else.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

If you are worried about them handling your firearm, buy a package of 14" very colorful zip ties. Run one through the mag well and slide. No way to fire it, and if unique enough, they can't replace it (obvious it was tampered with).

                  Great idea thank you.

Have you done this before? Would that be offensive to the FFL?

leave the gun, case, lock and magazine... factory box paperwork can stay as well. if no case came with the gun supply a cheap soft case so that it doesn't get banged up in the FFLs safe, I usually keep one in my truck for just this reason... although it is usually in the other truck but that is another issue altogether

take any ammo or aftermarket accessories... basically anything that could walk off, fall out or get misplaces take it with you.

Add the slide to that and you're gtg.

You'll never know if the ffl or one of his employees has shot the gun while you wait.
