I thought ghost load was the cool thing to do when that old Magpul Art of the blah blah series came out.

Ghost loading is where you get an EXTRA round into the gun beyond what it is specified to hold.
This is usually done on a Benelli type shotgun.
This includes some of the Berettas which are of the same Benelli design.
This works reliably on a Benelli because of how the benelli design releases a shell when the action is fired.
You load the magazine tube full and then you pull the bolt back 3/4 of the way and slip one shell down on the lifter and push another shell into the chamber.
It won't work as reliably on actions that release a shell based on the action bars moving.

What's happening on 870's is a failure to seat the cartridge fully behind the shell latch lets the shell jump over the shell lifter.
You have the shell in the gun, but it's not an EXTRA because it would have fit in the magazine had you pushed it all the way in.
You can't easily sneak an extra shell into a gun that releases the shell from the magazine based on action bar travel because the extra shell gets "ghost
loaded through the ejection port and opening the action far enough to slip a cartridge DOWN on top of the carrier releases a shell from the magazine on to the carrier.

870s cant ghost load they will jam up if you do it. Well the older ones pre flexi tab will.
