That still sounds off to me; like the bullet hit something else first.

The only thing that beats personal experience in such matters, is repeatable results that more than one person can observe.

What you are suggesting (sort of), is that if someone wants to shoot you with a .223 and all you have is an old phone books for protection, is for one to run towards the shooter so the bullet will frag in the book

I think the whole improvised armor thing is bogus, because if it is visible, the wearer gets shot in uncovered areas of the body. The least bulky (visible) armor is thin AR500 plate. That can in fact be formed to better fit the body, with a large enough press; even in its hard state. Steel is heavy, which is why soft and ceramic armor exist...

The OP won't follow through on this. Anyone want to bet?

Even though it was almost 30 years ago, I still remember being surprised at how well the phone book did against .223, and I believe the only reason why we tried it was because one of the guys mentioned something about phone books being poor mans body armor. We didn't shoot phone books with a 7.62x39 but I believe that one would not be stopped by phone books based one how much wood it will go through.

Back in the day when I was young and dumb, I was curios about these things so I shot at all kinds of objects with lots of different guns to see what the effect would be. We are lucky no one got hurt because there was lots of splatter flying back at us. One guy took a small splinter to the cheek and only new about it because he was leaking blood. Wear your eye protection when experimenting!

Well, a .223 55 grain FMJ will go though a single plate of mild steel 3/8" thick, at 100 yards (if hit nearly square on). However, it will not go through both sides of a mild steel pipe 2.5" diameter having only a 1/8" wall. So, some things sometimes behave different than one might expect.

I have made anything yet, I'm only at the planning/research phase. Only thing to see is my 3d models for my casts

I think you are going to run into difficulties locating a range that will allow you to shoot unusual targets. So, unless you have access to a large safe private property outside city limits, this whole plan may be SOL.

I know a couple guys with places that I can go shoot at, problem is they are ex co workers and I'd rather find a new place.

Whatever you did may have fixed your youtube link, but not for the reason you think. Considering how argumentative you are about details that don't matter, I think it will be a very long wait before you have any improvised armor videos.

Took advantage of the holiday sales and bought a chronograph from caldwell

Also picked up an AR500 11x14 III+ curved plate with base coat. If I can get my hands on a high speed camera I want shoot the plate with some m855 to check the spalling effect in slow motion. Got the 11x14/curved because I'm a big dude and that's the plate size I would use. Will be using their plate design as a starting point for my own. I also picked up a side plate and ABS plate for the same reasons. Got the build up coat on the side plate so I can compare the spalling effect.

No, IIIA isnt rifle rated. Its the highest rating before getting into rifle rounds
