    Precision Scope Mounting Tool

Ive been shooting my SPR for years. That was my longest range rifle previous to buying a PRS type firearm.

Given the specialized equipment and the precision focus of this aspect of the sport, I decided to refine my scope mounting process.

I used to do it with a plumb bob and bubble levels. Reading some articles and books, the consensus for precision scope mounting appears to be to align the bottom of the scope to the rail.

I'm game to try something new. So I bought this.

I'll be mounting the scope sometime this week. I purchased it not only for the precision aspect, but it will possibly ease the whole task immensely.

    Tip, tricks and feedback appreciated.

Did you lap the scope rings?
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

Interesting. I look forward to seeing updates on the scope mounting.

As far as tips, I have no first hand experience with that tool. However, I'd consider starting with squaring up the rifle in a proper vise for the rail to be as level as I could make it. Then I could use levels to verify what your new tool does.

I have a lapping tool, but I will not for this. I am using an MPA one piece mount. Not recommended.

I have the Arisaka tool and I've had mixed results. It boils down to how much space between the rail/mount and how flat your rail/mount are.

For example, these won't work well for Geissele mounts because the I-beam type construction.

I have the Arisaka too. Like tonyxcom said, it doesn't work in a lot of situations. I would venture to say it doesn't work in most situations.

I've also come across optics where the bottom of the scope isn't square with the reticle. I found that on both cheap and expensive scopes. I've also come across mounts that aren't square and level and rails that aren't square and level. YMMV.

The part in bold is true when leveling a scope with bubble levels. The bubbles need to be coordinated to be sure to have a level scope.

With this feeler gauge type of mounting process, there is no need to level the rifle. The scope is being leveled to the rail. What does need to be leveled to the ground is the scope bubble if one is mounted.

My belief is that good accuracy can be obtained using a plumb bob and a laser level to mark two points and a center that are all equal with respect to the reference of gravity along the same line as the bore of the rifle. The difficult part is finding the other end which needs to be based on a perpendicular line that is drawn through the center point of the optic (a reasonably zeroed reticle) and the center point of the barrel (which can be found with reasonable accuracy using a bullet style bore sighting laser. Just a rambling thought.

+1 on the Arisaka! Makes it so much easier to mount scopes when allowed. As said, it does depend on what type of rings. I wasn’t able to use it with an aero cantilever mount. I would still use plum and bob to verify the arisaka. Especially in a precision setting.

The best thing about the Arisaka tool is that it can be used to keep the scope in place as you tighten the rings.

Until you realize the Arisaka tool is wedged in so tight after torquing down the scope that you can't remove it.

According to the link i posted, the updated arisaka kit will work with the aero mounts.
