Buying ammo online

I have a few non-commons I'm buying ammo for. .357MAX and .41mag if it matters. It seems difficult to find someplace to have it shipped to. Later this morning, I'm going to a LGS to get a new G20 out of jail. I think I might have this worked out with them for $.05 and round. The problem I've found is that stores don't want to share their info with me directly. They want the shipping companies to contact them. The shipping companies wants the receiving store to contact them. Getting them to communicate with each other has proven difficult.



How are other people overcoming this dilemma? Placer County Rocklin area if it matters.

The shop is charging you 5 cents per round if you order online?? That is insane.

Anyway, that is normal, shops don't want to give their FFL info to people lots of times. Just ask the ammo dealer who the FFL info should be sent to, then provide that to your FFL, and they will send their info to the ammo dealer, then the ammo dealer can ship your ammo there.

For me it was confusing at 1st. But it went pretty smooth.

Live Scan/Fingerprint - check if local Notary has this ability. Ask for a B.O.F. form (Bureau of Firearms?) They'll electronically forward your finger prints to FBI. $71

03FFL - fill out this form twice, one copy to ATF, one copy, with cover letter to your local chief law enforcement authority (Chief of police in my case). Letter is to let them know you're a collector. $30

COE - done through the CFARS website. When you do your live Scan, I think there's a number they want for follow-up. Your COE will be a *.PDF copy and Cover letter signed by CAAG.

Total cost was roughly $130. $71 for Live scan COE / FBI And $30 for ATF/03FFL. ~$25 to the Notary.

03FFL is good for 3yrs. COE is annual and renewals are $22/yr.

I'm sure I'm missing some steps here.

Really, this saves a lot of headaches, then you can have it shipped directly to your home.

You are close enough to Reno that you will be able to drive there and buy and legally import with a C&R and COE.

You can reload. I waited to long to do this and now find it nearly impossible to find reloading supplies right now. I am on a waiting list to get a press direct from the factory in 4 to 6 months.

Do you have any directly blood relatives living out of state (grandparents, parents, children). Under the law they can legally send you ammo without it having to send it first to a FFL. It does not matter if it is a gift or you pay them for it.

Furthermore, if you go out of state and an immediate family member (grandparent, parent, child) or spouse gives you the ammo (it does not matter if you paid them for it or they just gift it to you) then you can legally import it into the state. The law does not specify or limit how you import it into the state. Ship it to yourself if you want.

There are enough exceptions to the law that many can find a way to legally import ammo that was obtained from out of state.

It is really an unenforceable law because the first violation is an infraction so the LEO has to witness the crime of the person buying the ammo and then follow the person and witness the crime of importation into the state and then risk having the citation tossed due to one of the many exceptions. It is just not worth the effort.

C&R FFL $30 for 3 years.
Process time +/- 3 months.

CA COE +/- $125 ($71 to state rest to Live Scan/m operator. I found one for $25 so mine was $96)
Process time +/- 2 months

Then go over to the Ammo section for a list of vendors that will ship to you.

You also don't need to fill out the application twice. Fill it out to the bottom of the application. You'll know that you're at the bottom when you see the top of the application again and it's already filled out for you. And, to make it easier they even redact the information your CLEO doesn't need.

Right! What I meant was, I searched for a local live Scan and local Notary popped up. Went there and got finger printed and paid the fees and they forward the info for me along with my filled out BOF form.

I've thought very seriously about this. My problem is time and room. Shooting is just one of the many things I do. The time and energy to learn and perfect each caliber I own would be excessive. At least for as often as I shoot. Then the room involved to set up and store everything involved. I just don't have any to spare.

You know, I've thought about this as well. But again, time and energy involved for the amount of ammo I realistically use just doesn't seem like a worth while return for me. Perhaps at a later date if thing change. But as things are now, I'm stuck paying the price as a casual amateur collector.

My FFL will process internet orders for free. Just find the right FFL. Also, you have no reason to view their FFL information. Be patient with communication between seller and FFL, they will email eachother. Unless you bug em’ too much.
