Complaining about Gun Shops and FFLs

If you want to post about unethical, unscrupulous and/or unprofessional practices or behavior of a gun shop or FFL, PLEASE name the shop and location.

That is a service to other members in exchange for the advice that they provide and to help others not to face the same headache.

Mods, please sticky this if you see fit.
There are too many sob stories (true or false) on the forum about unknown places.

i feel that anyone that doesn't out the name is lying about it. since there is no way to get the story from the store if no one knows what store it is.

we have seen some people here that make a sob story about how they were mistreated, but then the store will come back with video proof and pretty much refute the entire thing as the "customer" being a complete KAREN.

So public bashing/outing of a business (legitimate or not) based on one persons biased experience there is what we all want now? What’s next, restaurant reviews?

I’ve debated commenting on this since the last thread took a turn off the deep end.

I asked the moderators to lock or delete my post about the experience at the FFL simply because people were amping up the situation far beyond how I perceived it (attacking both me and the seller, going well beyond any perceived intent of the FFL).

People make mistakes and certainly that person did at the FFL. As I originally stated, I wanted to know if there was anything published in law that supported his claims. From the people who contributed and my own research, the FFL was incorrect. Thank you to those who read my post objectively and provided factual information. I literally wrote the post in the parking lot while waiting a few hours to see if the seller would respond while I was still in town (drove 2+ hours to get to the FFL).

The person who opened the magazine did not identify himself. He was not the person who was handling my DROS paperwork. Prior to the interaction with me, he was helping others out at a separate retail sales counter. Given that the person doing the pickup paperwork deferred to the guy’s judgement, I can only assume that he was the manager, which is why I stated that he was a salesman or manager.

Secondly, to those who stated that I should have done something when he started disassembling the magazine: The gun and the magazine were not in my possession. As the person just retrieved the item from the back, he had it on a separate counter and there was a plexiglass covid barrier separating me and him. At no point did he hand over the gun or magazine to me. Also, there is no way that I’m going to reach around the barrier to try to stop someone who is also carrying a loaded weapon on his hip. A magazine is not worth what could have happened if I tried to intervene. Also there was no point in having a verbal altercation since he outlined a clear path for how to resolve the issue (even though it was incorrect).

Like I said, it’s a real inconvenience for me and the seller, but outing the shop at this stage would not do anything to resolve the situation. I’m hoping that when we are both present to pick up the firearm at a future date, we can have a discussion with said person about his interpretation of the law. Also, the point one of the people made about how the shop person manufactured a high capacity magazine when he disassembled the blocked magazine is a great point that I wasn’t aware of. Did he intend to violate the law? I highly doubt it. These are trying times and everyone deserves a little extra consideration before rushing to judgement.

In the future, if I purchase another firearm with blocked magazines, I will most likely bring a factory 10 round magazine and have the seller hand that over in the box to the FFL to avoid any complications. The $40-50 cost isn't worth the time and aggravation if the FFL chooses to apply any additional terms, whether lawful or not.

            And no, it wasn’t Turner’s.

OP, I definitely agree with you in spirit. But, I don't want to go down a path where we have stickies and rules for anything and everything. Now we're diving into post formatting? Eh, I'm of the mindset to just let the post die in these types of cases. If the name of the FFL is requested by members via post reply, and the OP refuses (which is their right to do so), then no more replies are necessary. The thread will get bumped down out of sight, and the whole thing goes away on it's own. Fanning the flames is what gives these posts life, and is most likely the source of the real annoyance.

I mean my post was just to out the FFL because of one simple reason:

We have a lot of new members in 2020. They don't understand the maze of convoluted spaghetti code that CA calls laws. FFLs such as this can give them woefully bad information, and one that is willing to break property to prove their point is one that should likely be avoided by these 2020s that already have enough of a confusing new world to deal with. I mean, just look at my signature. Assuming that this isn't all a story that was made up, there are FFLs lying to people out there that there is "no such thing as new guns." And these new 2020 members actually believe such FUD. It's just not good for the new members.

It's not a matter of beef, it's a matter of protecting the broader 2A community, especially those that don't yet have the experience or knowledge to protect themselves. This FFL acting in this manner does not do these new members any favors.

Again, there's been an FFL that went as far as to confiscate a weapon and submit it to police, mistakenly believing it was an illegal weapon. It was not, the police said as much, and promptly returned the weapon to the individual. During this time, the individual was quite worried/anxious, as he felt he had done nothing wrong, which in fact, he did not. This individual did the right thing, which was name the FFL, and inform the community such that they could avoid such potential critically mistaken interactions. Do we really want to be enabling of such types of behavior, especially with the newer bulk of our community? Naming the FFL isn't for bashing purposes, naming the FFL is a service to the broader community such that other people don't end up a victim.

I'm all for supporting my local FFLs, I buy stuff locally and pay extra even when I can get cheaper prices at other FFLs or from Gunbroker or out of state, just because I realize the difficulty of operating an FFL and the important service they offer, but none of my FFLs have ever treated me in such a manner, and thus, I feel comfortable recommending them to everyone on a regular basis.

We thought it was entertaining to read Chaz Cheshire's reviews before he moved to TX. People review/discuss eateries all the time here.

While I'm not a fan of Yelp, or other similar sites, sometimes they can be useful. Last year I had a new fence installed by a reputable fence company. After the workers left I came home from work and saw some really shoddy workmanship in one section of a 75 foot run. I paid the bill but attached a page listing the deficiencies, along with pictures.

6 weeks went by...no response. So I hit yelp with a negative review. Within 24 hours I had workers on the property making everything right.

Sometimes you gotta use the system. Bad FFL...hit Yelp. If they make it right, follow-up and say so.

Maybe I’m missing it, but I’m seeing a complete lack of naming of bad FFLs in this thread.
