It has been my observation that people generally recommend what the have and therefore recommendations become somewhat of a self-validation proposition.

I agree with Robert1234 in post #23 that there is no one right answer. Pick one based on your budget and shooting style/needs and enjoy.

For me the choice was an AR- 9 with Glock mags standardized the same way as an AR-15 is configured.

Was out at the range for the first time since COVID this past Friday:

Black lower target was sighting in a red dot on an AR-9 at 25yds (Please ignore the taped areas in that they were for another rifle that had a loose rear sight that needed to be figured out for staking purposes.)

      It's actually "Ruger PC Carbine".

For the record, I have a Ruger PC Carbine and two AR9s (one Colt mag pattern and one Glock mag pattern). All are reliable and work great. If I have to pick one, it's the Colt mag AR cause it is easier to shove a magazine home on this gun.

Another vote for ruger carbine. Cheap and they work. I’ve got a Scorpion too, it’s great but don’t think it’s worth the difference I paid for it over the ruger.

Im personally a fan of the CZ scorpion, but they are a bit pricier than the other options. Ruger PC9 seem to be the go to option for people. Shot them but I never owned one because I just dont care for the rifle stock in a 9mm carbine. Now that the Chasis models are available for Californians from places like wbtguns.com Im thinking about picking one up when I can actually get my hands on one. AR9's can be good, just do your research and get a quality AR9, becuase AR9's can be notoriously unreliable.

I have a 9mm AR rifle. It is OK, but I would have rather bought a Ruger PCC 9. They didn't invent it until after I made my AR9. The PCC 9 is California friendly: No pistol grip.

AR9 rifles are finicky. Unless you buy one from a reputable company, you will have problems getting it to function. The biggest problem is getting the buffer spring and weight right.

California is tough on the AR platform. I have the CA7 multi caliber and bought a cmmg 9mm upper which comes with AR sized 9mm Mags. in the process of Maglocking it and can't wait to take it to the range.

in my mind I think it is the perfect firearm....hope it is a reality. I just wanted a shorter platform than the carbine. If it turns out to not meet expectations, then I may turn to the Ruger. If your girls just want to shoot and not have so many moving parts to learn, then the Ruger, which also is by all definitions legal, but if they are mechanically inclined, then maybe an AR.

Too expensive and difficult to find the rifle and ammo. Your best bet is a Henry lever action rifle in 22. Available, cheap, and plenty of ammo. You can buy 1400 rounds for $100 bucks.

I'd rather have a M1 Carbine. It's real history, shoots a sorta similar cartage, small and light. Will hold value and appreciate. Much cooler!

They're solid guns. If I were doing it again, I'd get the standard model, then buy the Midwest Industries handguard (it looks better than the one Ruger put on the gun). Personal preference, you might like the way the Ruger handguard looks.

                                So... for what it's worth

I was in the same boat as you, my inclination was towards an AR9 as I had a fair amount of AR experience under my belt already and even some spare parts. Long story short that involves a AR9/Kriss Vector9/Ruger PCC9/CZ Scorpion 9, cut to the chase and just get a Scorpion : ) Just one opinion but as I stated, been there, ( more than once.)
If it makes a difference, Wife is as anti-gun as there is, and even she claimed a reluctant acknowledgment that the Evo 3 was "a lot of fun." Good luck and I hope you enjoy whatever you decide on.
