    True but at some point soldiers with small arms have to stand on the patch of ground to claim it. To do so they are resisted by other soldiers with small arms. And that is when volume of fire comes into play.

    That's why the German army adopted the MG42 and MP44. And also why the Soviets equipped entire infantry formations with submachine guns.

        But of all the casualties in wars since WWI, how many actually got shot by small arms vs. all those that fell victim to artillery and bombs dropped from the air?

          In the Pacific theater the big Navy guns would pound the coastline right up until the landing crafts were near the beach. The first wave still sustained heavy casualties and had to confront the enemy with small arms.
